Hey guys, I hope this doesn't break any rules...but it seemed like a few people were looking for exactly what I make. I use Wicket and Craig for the raw veg-tan (or dyed), and also have Horween Chromexcel. Pictured here is the bifold, but I make minimalist ones too. Will last as long as you want...- whipstitch

Of course. I wouldn't personally be trying to recreate a waxed calf in the great traditional of old; just playing around with a possible new look for some wallets. I would start my experimenting with regular veg tan cow that has been split and then brush the flesh with a wire brush or...- whipstitch

How did you make your waxed calf, DFW? I burnish my flesh sides with some paraffin, but that's entirely to fight crocking on the insides of my wallets. You're right. Even if one was able to buy two pairs of the same shoes at the same time and did a perfect A and B study "caring" for only one of the pairs, no matter what the result is it wouldn't be safe to assume the same with any different pair. Perfectly cared for leather might fail, but the same leather would have failed sooner if not properly cared for. It's benefit vs. risk; I don't think it's more trouble than it's worth. People who love their shoes or other leather items to death with too much product is a whole other story though.- whipstitch

I think the solvents are a necessary evil. I remember a few years ago trying to make a finishing wax out of just coconut oil, paraffin, and beeswax. It couldn't...hold a candle to...?...plain neutral shoe polish.- whipstitch

Exactly. It can be frustrating. The ingredients are never clearly spelled out, and when I try to make predictions based off of what I can glean from MSDS sheets there is invariably some effect I hadn't accounted for. Nothing can replace good old trial and error.- whipstitch

It is definitely possible to angle a machine stitch, but you're right they don't look the same. I think a better indicator for someone trying to determine hand vs. machine stitch is the size and shape of the hole.- whipstitch
