    What wallet do you use?

$38 for minimalist vegtan up to $88 for Horween bifold. $98 and up for a bifold with coin pocket. Check out the link in my sig for various listings. I love making custom stuff as well.

    What wallet do you use?

Hey guys, I hope this doesn't break any rules...but it seemed like a few people were looking for exactly what I make. I use Wicket and Craig for the raw veg-tan (or dyed), and also have Horween Chromexcel. Pictured here is the bifold, but I make minimalist ones too. Will last as long as you want...

Thank you! That leather from Mike's was exactly what I was looking for when I made my switch, although the English kip I was using was half the price (though inconsistent, hence why I switched). Really surprising claim from Mr. Horween; very interesting. I would love to get some of that Kip from...

Is the scraping the same step that is described as shaving/mowing in the first document? If so, it sounds like that step was taken pretty well for me mechanically already

DWF, Thank you so much. Those resources are wonderful (including the link to J.R.). Sorry that I called you DFW in my other posts; I must have Texas on the mind. So like I said, I have Veg tan that has been split leaving me with a flesh side that feels like a buzz cut (I used to use kip but...

Of course. I wouldn't personally be trying to recreate a waxed calf in the great traditional of old; just playing around with a possible new look for some wallets. I would start my experimenting with regular veg tan cow that has been split and then brush the flesh with a wire brush or...

DFW, thank you so much. A ball park ratio on the cod oil/lanolin/beeswax would be enough to get me started; do you have one that would be a good starting point for my own experimenting?

How did you make your waxed calf, DFW? I burnish my flesh sides with some paraffin, but that's entirely to fight crocking on the insides of my wallets. I'd like one day to try and make a waxed flesh side that would be suitable as an outside of a wallet. Any tips appreciated. I also appreciate...

You're right. Even if one was able to buy two pairs of the same shoes at the same time and did a perfect A and B study "caring" for only one of the pairs, no matter what the result is it wouldn't be safe to assume the same with any different pair. I like the idea of "as needed generally," but...

Perfectly cared for leather might fail, but the same leather would have failed sooner if not properly cared for. It's benefit vs. risk; I don't think it's more trouble than it's worth. People who love their shoes or other leather items to death with too much product is a whole other story though.

I think the solvents are a necessary evil. I remember a few years ago trying to make a finishing wax out of just coconut oil, paraffin, and beeswax. It couldn't...hold a candle to...?...plain neutral shoe polish.

Exactly. It can be frustrating. The ingredients are never clearly spelled out, and when I try to make predictions based off of what I can glean from MSDS sheets there is invariably some effect I hadn't accounted for. Nothing can replace good old trial and error.

    Hermès, handstitched leather goods

It is definitely possible to angle a machine stitch, but you're right they don't look the same. I think a better indicator for someone trying to determine hand vs. machine stitch is the size and shape of the hole.
