    Poor man's watch thread

I miss my Shogun, and I periodically debate revisiting it, but I know my grail is a Pelagos, in large part due to the bracelet. Nothing beats wearing a titanium watch, especially in the summer. Clever marketing has conditioned us to equate heavy with quality, and so people walk around with steel...

The lacquer looks good but the gilt hands clash with the steel/white theme elsewhere.

Looks good, but would look better with indices instead of numerals. And why does Seiko absolutely refuse to ever make dateless models? They would have so many great dress watches.

I have settled on Isofranes as the rubber / summer strap of choice; they really do breathe better than all the other rubber options and dont stay wet. Perlons are good too but the few I have had started fraying at the seals. Borealis makes a very affordable isofrane clone, in an excellent...

    Poor man's watch thread

It is common for watches to gain / lose a few seconds in certain positions (gravity pulls differently on the balance), but to see a change of several minutes per day, and relatively even accuracy another day, suggests something out of the ordinary. I am not an expert on these movements, as I...

I am a collector of Russian / Soviet watches and they are capable of FAR better accuracy than that, 10s or less per day. Your raketa needs a service badly. Check the watchuseek Russian subforum for recommendations on cheap service (less than $50).

If thats an option it would be the best one

Can someone comment on their favorite Isofrane clone? I am deciding between the Borealis and the Obris Morgan. Ive heard the Borealis is softer and more supple, and they allege it has been formulated without silicon (preventing lint attraction). However, some commenters say the Obris Morgan is...

Is the strap finished on both sides?

Digging that Oris 65 with the vintage inspired lume and indices instead of numerals. Anyone else doing that look under $500-600? The parnis-type manufacturers have been cloning some of the vintage reissue Tudors decently well now but they are all 5ATM WR, which is a no go for me (and Im...

Wish Seiko had more no-date models. On such a beautiful blue sunburst I would rather have it be all dial.

Finally finished my first successful mod. Polished 710 case Amphibia, swapped for paddle hands and silver seconds. Polished SS bezel and shark mesh. Of course, the 8 o clock lume pip decided to break off the dial. I just cant win with these things. Eventually Ill source another dial (or maybe I...

Good work, I agree the strap and shroud were the worst parts. If a color matching shroud can be machined / anodized that would be even better.

I had a tritium model (I believe daynight?) for a short while. They are solid watches, but the knuckle-dragger case dimensions eventually put me off. My wrists are 7.5'' and 42mm is about the max that is appropriate, IMO. Dive watches should not be ballast.

Jazz, whats that Seiko on the striped nato? Are all the years of images on SF lost forever? They are a valuable resource!

Swapped hands on a vintage antimagnetic Vostok amphibia I have. Also replaced the gaskets and am deciding between these two bezels. Thoughts?

This. Some of the outright garbage people are wearing or lusting over boggles me. Its one thing when its an artifact of your own long term ownership, but I find it interesting that this fever for absurd levels of patina and cosmetic flaws isnt present in automotive collectors, for example

Probably not to everyones taste, but I finally snagged a vintage Soviet chonograph that I have had my eye on for a while. These Sturmanskie chronographs were sold with the 3133 caliber soviet movement (which is further differentiated into hacking and 24 hr / moonphase / other indicator...

Its not bad. Ruined by the date window though

I have purchased a handful of seikos and citizens from this seller, all of which were below $20 shipped, and have clean movements. Some of his listings may have oxidized hands or faces, but he has many examples that are in good condition (some of these may be fantasy / frankenwatches, assembled...
