I have a pair of the +j wool tapered pants in size 29 and the leg opening is actually less than 7", closer to 6.5". They are very slim but they don't have a painted-on appearance. I doubt they'd work with bulkier builds though.- confab

Uniqlo makes really good cheap basic zip hoodies. They recently switched from a 100% cotton body to a cotton-poly blend. I haven't had a chance to check the quality of the new fabric, but if they're comparable to previous seasons the fit and durability will be excellent.- confab

Uniqlo's +J down vest looks nicer than that one imo, though it's $100 and stocks may be running low by now: image. I have a +J down vest from fw/10 and while it's not a really high quality piece, the fit is nice and it keeps me warm. Land's End makes some cheap down vests but I don't know...- confab

The Grenson Christian has a similar shape to the Frye James you quoted, if you don't mind the high-shine finish (here's a fit pic). Also the Grenson Lewis if you prefer a brogue boot. You could also look into Paul Smith boots but that would be a jump up in price.- confab
