    Leather Quality and Properties

Mostly I use bridle leathers, but also calf, and pigskins when I can get them, for lighter leathergoods, and pigskins and Goatskins for linings. Don't work with exotics often, so different trades - different leathers - different suppliers.

Won't deal with Crack, had severe quality problems recently, and weird customer service ( lack of ) That saying, I did have a 'mock reindeer' back in the 90's But I feel that if I cannot get the 'real thing', then just move on. I am happy with the repeatable quality of JE Sedgwicks bridle...

I confess, I do not know, I will have to go back and reread, something I have not done for 30 years, just dipped into. And, I further confess, that even though we both work with leather, and share many tools, I know nothing about shoemaking, a different, and mysterious trade :)

So sorry, I am unsure what 'Male-maker' is, I will go through the detailed text, and see if I can find it. I can only guess 'inc' means incorporated ? I have all of Waterer's books, with the exception of 'Spanish Leather' , which seems to be unobtainable, although I have a photocopy of it. His...

These might be of some interest, both taken from 'Leather in Life Art and Industry' by John W. Waterer. One of the problems that Makers face, is the twisting of the Language, by marketing and advertising, obviously for their own ends. Current 'buzz words' include Bespoke, Artisan etc, and...

In praise of the humble, and obviously misunderstood solid rivet Above is part of my collection of solid rivets, both copper and brass. I use the dome headed rivets to attach locks to briefcases and folio's. These can only be used when there is a metal plate on each side, You...

These are the photo's I sent to the chap on e-bay selling the SAB briefcases, to explain and illustrate the difference between machine stitching, and hand stitching.I just took some snaps of a case in the workshop. He said " that he had been told by someone that SAB cases were entirely hand...

    Discuss Swaine Adeney Brigg cases

He has listed the 2 cases he has on e-bay uk, as "100% TRADITIONAL HAND STITCHED ONE STITCH AT A TIME " this is incorrect, only the handle and the chapes holding the handle to the case are hand stitched, the rest is machine stitched. On your case, the chapes holding the body straps will also be...

I am often being asked about 'patina', and can we have it now, no I reply, it is a natural process, and takes time. I was contacted by a client from years ago, inquiring about a project he has, and looked him up on the web, to find that he is using a bag I made some 25 years ago, as his home...

Nice collection :) I may have shared this before ? but a catalogue from Barrow and Hepburn 1992, If memory serves me ? Barrow and Hepburn were the casemakers, and Gale was the tannery back then? I received a sample cutting from Gale, of the red leather they were using then, for the...

My guess would be the 1950's, possibly 60's. I'm basing that on the Chubb lock, which in over 30 years of casemaking, I have not seen before, and is certainly no longer made. From what I could gather, speaking to someone at Chubb, they no longer make locks ( that part of the company was sold off...
