Since Oxygen Bleach is out, what about vinegar and a vinegar/surfactant (like Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate) and a plain soap (Ivory flakes or the like)? If I recall correctly, there is little difference between Woolite and detergent aside from the instructions (which are still no good).

Godd*mn slum lord owned the whole block, some guy out of NYC who keeps his buildings abandoned to drive up the potential price of his lots. Cost of the demo for three buildings was officially listed at 10k when it should have been 250k+ to do it properly. And, knocking the buildings down was...

So, I was about half an hour from visiting this store when I got a call from my brother. "Dude, the Salvation Army just collapsed"..."What???", "Your ok?" They had a dozen what seemed like new Cafe Coton shirts and a BB Golden Fleece suit I was waiting to pick up. The Coton shirts for an...

Yesterday's find, cleaned an photographed. But I don't know if its real - there is a wavy line of stitching (not photographed) and there are square gold foil "corners" around the Gucci logo - just two points of sloppiness which are not allowing me to feel confident. 12.99 at Salvation Army...

Its been a day of firsts. Firstly, Sarcasm must escape some people, particularly when it comes to a thrift store bragging thread and 2$ RLPL Made in Italy Wool Cargo Pants (It was half off day everything at the local private school thrift, so they would have otherwise been $4). If that's...

Found some funny stuff today. Ralph Lauren Cargo Pants... Olivegreen but get this - made from wool and I think their fake because the label is purple. Don't they use a Navy Blue background? And there's this funny pair of pants. It's got Scotch all along the inside band. Says its an...

Deets. First, from the trash: 7020e on top with foam. And yes, the other boxes have those components in them. Had a lot of photographing to do so I didn't take them all out. Then this little interesting thing: That's right, King George V. which dates this box from May 1910...

So, apparently when someone says "I found a ton of aldens" they get lots of mail. Its been snowing so I've been washing, polishing and ironing some of the last few hauls. No pics yet. So, some deets: Model/size (width)/color 663/9 (C/E)/cordovan 770/10.5 D/black (for brooks brothers...

Normally, I visit the thrifts on the way to school in the morning. But, I'm not in school and I'm still dropping by daily. During the school year, I usually walk out empty handed or with one or two things. This past week, daily visits, I've been spending on average $120 per day. It's...

Question: If your walking to the thrift store (as I was yesterday) and stumble upon a complete vintage NAD stereo system (7020e receiver, 5100 CD player and a NAD tape deck) in their boxes with foam (sans manuals) but on the trash, does that count as a brag-worthy find? Since this was a block...

Quote: Only once, and it didn't work. Today I found an absolutely mint Dunhill tux... but the pants (unpriced) had been stashed with the childrens clothing. Seeing as how the mens and childrens clothing are next to each other, someone was exceptionally lazy. The smart ones stash the good...

I would have picked them up, and if they are a UK 8 I'd ask for a proxy :) Very fine automotive sandpaper (1k-2k+ grit), fiebings black leather dye, and a layer of creme/wax melted in with a lighter will work wonders. You won't have the same grain structure in that area but unless someone is...

Tiles and bricks weigh more than water. Once you start using fresh percarbonate it REALLY has some lifting power, so the bucket on top tips and empties no matter how often you push it down. For a while I was using 3-4 full bottles of Tide on top of a large plastic deli-spread tray placed on...

^ Forgot to mention, TSP prevents re-adhesion of whatever gets dissolved in solution, like color, on fabric. Keeps dirt and other stuff in solution to be rinsed away. That's why with water (a detergent by itself) you always start from the bottom when washing walls.

When I do "The Method" I generally add some TSP to the mix. About one of the "small" oxyclean scoop full. I have City sewage which filters phosphates out, so I wouldn't recommend it at all if you have a septic system or country bumkin sewage (as it will cause algae bloom) but it helps. It...

Well, a word of caution. There is a war on, most people still forget that. When all that stuff started I was in college - remember the rather pathetic protests and counter-protests by the school's republican club. I dropped out and found myself on a boat. Spent a couple doing "stuff" mostly...

Being in Philly, no. Not at all. You would think so - I know I did, and for a while I was scouring what I could in the Main Line on a regular basis. But prices are through the roof, quality is just not there even if you go regularly and often. Not to say I haven't found neat things every now...
