I think the visible eyelets suit them. I have a long unworn pair of Woodstocks in black that are a bit "neither fish nor fowl" in that they're a bit chunky for formal wear but not casual enough for jeans etc. Granted that's part of the deal with black shoes. Many thanks to @sleepyinsanfran @Munky and @badgeggcat. I like the contrast welts so I've no desire to darken it up hugely but I'm sure it will take on a darker colour over time due to age, exposure to the elements and the "brush bleed" described by Munky.
