Yes I've seen it, although not in the flesh. It's a collaboration with Belgian store/label Bellerose. A 2012 take on the Cabourn rope belted Duffel coat design (there was a black one in 2010 I believe). What's interesting is that it is apparently made in Belgium using Belgian fabric. Since...

The list of stockists seems awfully out of date anyway. It lists a store in The Hague that closed recently and hasn't stocked new seasons of NG for over two years anyway and also Nitty Gritty and Tresbien in Sweden who have stopped carrying Cabourn this or last season.

Yes, those are traditionally used for firefighter coats, like the vintage one below (allegedly from the ´40s), but also on more recent examples. They serve the same function as the naval clips and wooden toggles, being easier to operate with gloved or very cold hands. .

All this Cabourn talk made me buy that dark navy cold weather parka in 52 that lingered on Superdenim. A relative bargain, but still quite an outlay. It fits somewhat smaller than I expected when considering the measurements on Superdenim, with a high armhole and narrow cuffs when buttoned. I...

That's a weird one, not really sure about the styling. Can't really imagine wearing NC gear at the speeds that would necessitate such a helmet. Most of my bikes are from the '80s anyway, so when in style I go for wool or acrylic from the relevant era. Although I also have a cobbled...

You are right of course, it might refer to the patches on the early sherpa/tenzing/mallory jacket (could be the material before Cabourn used ventile patches). You can't tell from that picture but it is part of a description of that jacket. Or who knows, Kevlar might be quite a common Sherpa...

Thanks for the picture, I think you are quite right to compare it with a donkey jacket. This is also a garment designed to withstand hauling heavy loads, similar to the sacks draped around head and shoulders that have been used to load and unload cargo from ships in European ports since medieval...

The 2003 'Ascent of Cabourn' book Eric showed earlier has what is probably the earliest type of the jacket that is currently called the Mallory. Back then it was simply called 'Sherpa jacket' and later would be known as the Tenzing jacket. More interesting is the apparently authentic old black...

The earliest (military) garment I know off with those clips, is British. The coat tropal lined, which seems to be the rough inspiration for the Beetham Duffel.

Here some pictures of my Cameraman and the American Parka. Sorry for the poor quality, but the light is very bad right now. They share some obvious design details, such as the clips (four instead of three on the parka and like Eric says a simpler non-adjustable system) , the covered ear-holes...

Nice write-up. The actual mix of the vintage jackets is very interesting. Nigel is wrong though (or the interviewer made a mistake) in calling the top part a British Naval jacket. It´s clearly a US Navy ´Parka, wet weather, spec 288b´. I have one of those and a cameraman, if people are...
