Wow, it's easy to ruffle feathers. I never claimed the "cordwainer" word and others you used (like frippery and gimrack were not somewhere in some dictionary- I never claimed they were not verified words.. I merely said they were not in my two normal dictionaries. And this fact alone should...- ShoeMeister

Perhaps. I was merely suggesting (asking actually) that it "may" be a sign of exceptionalism, since I have yet to see this feature on any other shoes (including many $1000+ ones from both Italian and English factories)- and I have really looked. It is generally hard to tell what is exceptional...- ShoeMeister

Interesting. It's another possibility, but I do not find it on any of my Italian shoes but one (I have 10 pairs of Italians 450-1150 in price). And the other picture I have posted is of a $1500 Sutor shoe on ebay presently, and that star mark is on the bottoms, not the heel. The seller tells...- ShoeMeister

I have a pair of Corneliani shoes that for years I have wondered if they were exceptional or not, because I have not yet seen a pair of shoes with a sealed seam on the tongue edge- it is always a raw edge, even on super-high end shoes. That said, thanks very much for your input and time- at least it wasn't a joke. But I don't agree. Seems like rank speculation to me because the stars are so random- I have rarely seen the mark, and only on high-end shoes (meaning ones in the $600+ price range).
