Shoemaking Techniques and Traditions--"...these foolish things..."

I expect that is what the maker meant - that the midsole is stitched to the welt by hand, and then the outsole is pegged. Maybe Jesper knows. EDIT: my mistake, I didn't see a comma in the description - "hand welted, midsole stitched, outsoles pegged" My understanding is that pegging the outsole...

Shoemaking Techniques and Traditions--"...these foolish things..."

Would a midsole solve these problems? The maker that was linked has a delicious plain toe derby on their front page with handwelted midsole and pegged outsoles. Presumably it is easier to replace the midsole than the insole.

Passus shoes - Fine Shoes from Budapest - Official Affiliate Thread

That's kinda funny, I think the influence actually worked the other way round historically. Hungarian shoemaking is well known for its high toe boxes. While the long split is likely a Western European innovation, the practical and comfortable high toe box probably flowed over from Austro-Hungary...

Is Vass really worth the money?

There are other handwelted options out there that beat Vass at similar price points pre-Covid. Sad to see they are using fiberboard for the heel stack, but I guess its inevitable. That said, I agree with the OP that I would still rate Vass shoes at their website prices over many other GYW shoemakers.

What is the best value shoe maker you know?

Interesting discussion. What is the connection between insole and upper then? Looks like there is no direct connection aside from the cement between lining/stiffener and insole?

The Shell Cordovan, non-Alden Shoe and Boot Thread

I'm not talking about the surface of the leather upper though. Rather, between the outsole stitching and the base of the upper. It looks like the upper was lasted quite tightly (as it should be), but the maker didn't smooth out the wrinkles that come from lasting, so that the inseam stitch is...

Is it just me or are there some grinning? There seem to be visible white spots where the at somewhat regular intervals around the toebox.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Actually, for the type of shoes he's buying, those heels are at best particle leather board, most likely straight up plastic.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

You buy new shoes every month but only have 6? Even Prada's products can't be that bad. Construction looks to be purely gemmed but surely glue doesn't disintegrate in 3 weeks.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Wow I didn't anticipate the number of people on here who have spent what must be thousands of dollars on shoes but without branching into handwelted or bespoke pairs. Interesting.

The Shell Cordovan, non-Alden Shoe and Boot Thread

I don't think that's high at all, the handwelted construction is definitely worth paying for.

    Normal Shoe Creasing?

leather shoes go quite well with jeans and polo shirts.

Shoemaking Techniques and Traditions--"...these foolish things..."

Since we happen to be on the resoling train: 1) Do most cobblers know how to resole shoes that are constructed using norweigian/norvegese/goyser stitching? 2) If no, does that mean these construction methods are not very shoe-wearer-friendly? Trading off practicality for aesthetics?

Shoemaking Techniques and Traditions--"...these foolish things..."

If I'm not mistaken, the steps for resoling a good condition GY welted shoe is exactly the same as for handwelted shoes right? 1) remove outsole 2) slap on new outsole 3) stitch (either by machine or by hand) If GY welted shoe is in not so great condition, cork falling to bits, then an...
