    The **** in the left side seam was to allow the hilt of the officers sword to be worn outside the coat, while the scabbard remained inside. Since the sword belt and slings are traditionally worn over the tunic but not over the great coat. I think this is the case for all branches of the services.

    I love my Barbour. I have a vintage Bedale off ebay complete with what appears to be dried up grouse blood. THe fit on the sleeves of the 42R is good for me but like an above poster, the jacket shape always bells out somewhat at the waist. The coat is not long enought to wear a jacket underneath...
