Long before American gangsters and the Mediterranean nobility donned chalk-stripe suits, the phenomenon was already fashionable in Mayfair, London. Prince Edward (1874-1972), the eldest son of King George V, was very fashion-conscious. A great advocate of the chalk stripe, he took it out of its London isolation and into the world. He was a man of small stature, but the thin vertical stripes made him look taller.
Edward’s chalk stripes became his trademark and prominent people followed in his wake, for example Fred Astaire and Cary Grant. The Colombo weaving mill made a butterfly-lined variation for the JORT Collection, in a mix of 96% wool and 4% silk.
