ZackyBoy, What's the serving size on your fish oil pills? Is it 4 and you go for 3 servings a day? That sounds like so much fish oil... do you shit roofing tar? Are you going for a particular IU of omega-3s? Anyone try chondroitin as a supplement for joint health? I just started taking a low dose this week. I am doing Stronglifts 5x5 and The Bear 5x5 on in between days, giving myself two full days of healing at the end of the week. Just finished week 6. Week 5 and week 6 have left me pretty busted up after my last day. I am less interested in simple high protein / high cal diets and much, much more interested in what weightlifting approved diets are managing to maximize nutrients. I'm doing a few things, wanna do more: - Dried cranberries with my carbs for anti-oxidants. - Sesame seeds for Vitamin E in place of a portion of the usual serving of almonds / walnuts. - Massive amounts of spinach / mixed greens inside my whole wheat tortilla wraps (egg salad w/ olive oil mayo vs egg beater omelet vs tuna fish vs chicken breast). I'm probably going to give up and get some whey soon. Something small from Target, probably, see how that goes. Maybe learn how to cook a decent calf liver.
I take around 5000mg a day...and the coffee makes me shit far worse than fish oil ever could. For my diet I follow a rough guideline of John Berardi, which is (in it's simplest form..) clean eating, protein with every meal, no carbohydrates from liquids, and fiber with every meal. You might want to try out Precision Nutrition... it's probably the best diet book for athletes/health conscious people. I have a friend who takes chondroitin during his steroid cycles to help avoid the joint dryness and he says it works.

One problem that I have is portion confusion. A lot of people have this, of course, but mine was definitely eating too little instead of too much for years. When I read your daily break down, the serving sizes are hard for me to imagine to reach 3-3.5k cal / day.

Could you break down those meals you have listed in grams and calories? For example, at the end, is that a cup of yogurt and 1/4 cup almonds for 400 cals? When you list meat, is that 4, 8, 16 ounces?

I take between 2.1g-2.8g of combined DHA/EPA (forget the actual amount of fish oil, look for DHA/EPA content) daily. This equals about 7-9 standard fish oil pills. I know people taking much more. I've read studies recommending 1.5-1.8g of DHA/EPA at a 2:1 ratio for athletically inclined individuals. Fish oil doesn't cause bad shits and I don't know where you would get that impression.

Chondroitin hasn't been thoroughly studied enough for anybody to discern whether it has positive effects. Some studies show significant benefits above placebo, some don't.

I've heard anecdotes of it working in humans. I've personally seen two of my extremely arthritic dogs act young again and be able to run after being put on a glucosamine-blend dog food.

I started on glucosamine this week for my fubar knee. We'll see if it works....
