DEAR GQGEEK, URGENT AND CONFIDENTIAL CELLULAR TELEPHONY PROPOSALS I AM MARIAM ABACHA, WIDOW OF THE LATE NIGERIAN HEAD OF STATE, GEN. SANI ABACHA. AFTER HE DEATH OF MY HUSBAND WHO DIED MYSTERIOUSLY AS A RESULT OF BRAIN TUMOR, I WAS INFORMED BY OUR LAWYER, BELLO GAMBARI THAT, MY HUSBAND WHO AT THAT TIME WAS THE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA, CALLED HIM AND CONDUCTED HIM ROUND HIS APARTMENT AND SHOWED HIM FOUR CARDBOARD BOXES CONTAINING IPHONE ALL IN UNLOCKED STATE AND HE EQUALLY MADE HIM BELIEVE THAT THOSE BOXES ARE FOR USE BY CANADIAN FOR PERSONAL TELEPHONY. ALONG THE LINE, MY HUSBAND DIED AND SINCE THEN THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN AFTER US, MOLESTING, POLICING AND FREEZING OUR BANK ACCOUNTS AND EVEN MY ELDEST SON RIGHT NOW IS IN DETENTION UNABLE TO MAKE TELEPHONE CALL. MY FAMILY ACCOUNT IN SWITZERLAND WORTH US$22,000,000.00 AND 120,000,000.00 DUTCH MARK HAS BEEN CONFISCATED BY THE GOVERNMENT. THE GOVERNMENT IS INTERROGATING HIM (MY SON MOHAMMED) ABOUT OUR ASSET AND SOME VITAL DOCUMENTS. IT WAS IN THE COURSE OF THESE, AFTER THE BURIAL RITE AND CUSTOMS, THAT OUR LAWYER SAW YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS FROM THE PUBLICATION OF THE NIGERIAN BUSINESS PROMOTION AGENCY. THIS IS WHY I AM USING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SOLICIT FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION AND ASSISTANCE TO HELP ME AS A VERY SINCERE RESPONSIBLE PERSON. I HAVE ALL THE TRUST IN YOU AND I KNOW THAT YOU WILL NOT SIT ON THIS IPHONES. I HAVE SUCCEEDED IN CARRYING THE FOUR CARBOARD BOXES OUT OF THE COUNTRY, WITH THE AID OF SOME TOP GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL, WHO STILL SHOW SYMPATHY TO MY FAMILY, TO A NEIGHBOURING COUNTRY (ACCRA-GHANA) TO BE PRECISE. I PRAY YOU WOULD HELP US IN GETTING THIS IPHONES TRANSFERRED OVER TO YOUR COUNTRY. EACH OF THESE CARDBOARD BOXES CONTAINS US$775.00 (SEVEN HUNDRED SEVENTY FIVE UNITED STATES DOLLARS) WORTH OF IPHONE AND TOGETHER THESE FOUR BOXES CONTAIN US3,100.00(THREE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED UNITED STATESDOLLARS ONLY). THIS IS ACTUALLY WHAT WE HAVE MOVED TO GHANA. THEREFORE, I NEED AN URGENT HELP FROM YOU AS A MAN OF GOD TO HELP GET THIS IPHONES IN ACCRA GHANA TO YOUR COUNTRY. THIS IPHONES, AFTER GETTING TO YOUR COUNTRY, WOULD BE WITH MINUTES SHARED ACCORDING TO THE PERCENTAGE AGREED BY BOTH OF US. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS MATTER IS STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL AS THE GOVERNMENT WHICH MY LATE HUSBAND WAS PART OF IS STILL UNDER SURVAILLANCE TO PROBE US. YOU CAN CONTACT ME THROUGH MY FAMILY LAWYER AS INDICATED ABOVE AND ALSO TO LIAISE WITH HIM TOWARDS THE EFFECTIVE COMPLETION OF THIS TRANSACTION ON TEL/FAX N0:xxx-x-xxxxxxx AS HE HAS THE MANDATE OF THE FAMILY TO HANDLE THIS TRANSACTION. THANKS AND BEST REGARD MRS. MARIAM ABACHA

Dude, no one has iphones in Canada and even the Apple store is out of stock I believe. If Rogers, the largest seller of iphones in the country, didn't have any, didn't you think it was weird that this small shop somehow had them? That should have been a big red flag imo.

And why would you pay for something without seeing the goods first? I wouldn't even buy drugs that way. At any rate, I hope this works out for you but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Isn't Rogers on the same GSM frequency as AT&T? Couldn't you just buy an unlocked one off eBay or craigslist and pop your Rogers sim in?

+1. You can probably get an unlocked iphone for $200.

I paid the money before I knew it wasn't in stock....I never really looked. The only reason I did it this way was because I'm a little impulsive and I had been pining for a new phone for a while. When my mother showed up with the money, it was unexpected and I was close to the store, so i just said "fuck it, time to get an iphone."

    you idiot. [IMG]

Hard to get any info out of rogers. My impression is that they're backed up, but that people are slowly getting them as they come in on a priority basis. I've seen phones at smaller shops. They import them from elsewhere instead of the regular supply chain. A girl I know just bought one from a store like that for a thousand bucks (no kidding).

Anyway, this particular store had iphones even back when the original was released (or was it the 3g? can't remember) and was hard to get, and rogers had exclusive distribution back then too. I know people that had bought tons of iphones from these guys. That's why no flags went off. That was a while ago and in the meantime I heard about all this other mess, which is the only reason i'm nervous about it. Either way, i guess i'll find out soon enough. [IMG]

I only question why GQGeek is so upset about getting screwed. I can only imagine it's the most action he's gotten in years.

Hey Geek.... so everybody's bashing and stuff, I'm not going to add to the pileon... I'll say this, what I think you should consider doing is to go to the store and get your money back...

Now the HOW is what nobody's really talked about and I think it'll make all the difference. even though you may be getting edgy and stuff, I think walking in there pissed off and demanding your money isn't a good approach. they'll get defensive and yell back. So I'd make a copy of the reciept to keep at home incase, then take them the reciept and say...

"I came in on X day... you said that you would have the phone. I paid for the phone, you told me it would be in stock Y day or around then. I returned several times and you don't have the product. I've paid you for something and you haven't given me any product back. You haven't sold me anything yet! The money I've paid doesn't belong to you yet because you haven't given me the product, all you've given me is a promise... and at this point you haven't fulfilled that promise. I am putting this transaction on hold for now, I want my money back now please and when you get these phones in stock, here's my name and number, let me know and I'll come get one" .... all in a calm collected manner.

    or something along those lines.
Anyway, good luck. don't stress too much, but I would deal with this asap.
assume it'll work out, don't go in with the attitude that they've screwed you. for all you know it's still perfectly legit.

    Or you could do this...

I hate to pile on (okay, not really [IMG]), but why did you pay with cash in the first place? Did the seller offer you a significant discount for a cash purchase? The only times I use cash instead of credit are (1) a purchase under $10, (2) drinks at a bar so I don't have to wait for a busy bartender to retrieve my card and run it, and (3) splitting the cost of a restaurant meal with a group.

Dunno. I had it in my pocket. Maybe it's a case of never having been burned. I've paid cash for tons of stuff in my life, often relatively expensive things, and never had a problem. I'd bought from this place before. My friend used to be tight with the owner. And the guy i know that used to buy phones from them for his company probably bought 20 iPhones from there (for gifts). I guess i'll see what happens today. No matter what happens though, i'll be using my credit card for just about everything from now on. [IMG]

I found out the guy I've been dealing with isn't the owner. I also spoke to a friend that knew the original owner (the new guy's ex-partner) and some of what went on, and to sum it up, the guy is a total douchebag that can't be trusted. So, when I went in to the store today I brought a friend to witness what went on, just in case. I spoke to the same guy again. He told me the same story again and that they had been expecting a shipment this week, and that they really did have one in stock when he sold it to me but that they fried it when they were unlocking it (i don't believe this part at all). I told him that when he sold me the phone, he said they had one in stock, and that i needed a phone like yesterday a week ago, so i either needed the phone or a full refund. He said he understood and that I should come back in the afternoon. I asked him if we had a deal that I would either get my phone or my money back this afternoon, and he said yes. They're still not giving me warm fuzzy feelings, so if they stroke me again this afternoon, I'm gonna give them formal notice of my intent to sue, in which case it will be for court costs, lost wages, and the money I paid them. [IMG] Even if they are running some sort of scam, I can't imagine going to court with me would be worth it for them over a single iPhone. I checked around and they're not really advertising iPhones, which they would be doing if they were planning a "go out of business and steal as much money beforehand as possible" routine, so I'm hopeful that it will all be ok.

Why would you sue? Call the police and report the theft. Better if you can call directly from the store and have the cops come straight there. Use your cell phone. Oh, wait. Sorry. Borrow a cell phone.

Call the cops? Aren't they for emergencies? I thought you had to use small claims court for disputes with merchants and stuff like that.

If I was gonna go to court and had to waste my time screwing around with this shit instead of earning money, why not? It's not like I've done anything wrong here. The only thing i'm guilty of is maybe being too trusting. Don't know if the judge would factor it in or not, but why wouldn't I put it on there?
