I don't know how long it is since you were there or where you went to college, but having taught in universities in the UK and Canada for more than a decade now, and been a grad student for several years before that, and attended conferences worldwide, I've only ever encountered a couple of grad students who looked anything like that, and one of them was me! This might be the stereotype of grad student wear, but it's only really seen in the movies these days - in my limited experience, of course.
