Good Lord. This is a great example of why Freddie King was so good. Clapton has the dexterity, the technique...but the soul isn't there. Freddie's tone is unreal and Clapton can't match it. Stark difference between the teacher and the student. And for the Clapton nuts who will complain...he's said more than once that he couldn't even keep up with Freddie.

Lefty, saw Leon Bridges on Austin City Limits and enjoyed it. He didn't wow me but I love seeing nouveau soul.

Think I saw that as well. The one with an entire audience of white people? Are there no black people in Austin?

Every one of his songs just seem to be missing a small element that would make them great. Maybe a better producer on his next album will help. But he's a cool cat and I dig what he's doing.

Damn some good stuff in the dublab. I remember that when Dilla died it was just fucking chaos … so sudden. Dude was so legit.

Begins with Yèkatit from the Timeless - Mulatu Astatke session (I guess?!) for some reason.

Astatke's concert was great, by the way. A bit difficult to distinguish Astatke's individual skill, aside maybe from when he was playing the vibraphone, cause the bits of drumming here and there blended into the sound. Great show nonetheless, talented musicians. Astatke has a great presence. Very charismatic.

    Also pretty damn great:

Okay so this is one of those songs that no one would ever guess is one of my favorite songs. I get obsessed with this song once a year or so. (Maybe I've even posted it before.)

The album is good, but this song is absolutely fantastic. I love the honky-tonk vibe sprinkled with generous 60s/70s funk & soul. The backing band is so solid. Nigel Olsson gets away with stuff that no studio drummer should ever get away. The lyrics (unlike other tunes on the album) tap into the Americana vibe without completely pandering (like "Country Comfort"), and are poetic without being cheesy. Probably one of the best songs by a "all-time great" artist that was never a hit single.
