    I think I've done a brandy old fashioned a couple times but I actually prefer a Vieux Carre

    I grew up in Wisconsin, where the Brandy Old Fashioned is practically the official state cocktail. I've never spoken to anyone outside of Wisconsin who had ever even heard of it. Whenever I want one now, I just make it myself.

    I just googled Vieux Carre--it looks a lot more complex than the Old Fashioned!

    I just got back from Mexico with bottles of Clase Azul, Milagro, Esperanto and 7Leguas. so I opened them up tonight and had a little of each one.

    It's really not that difficult to make and it is a delicious drink. If you like brandy old fashioneds I bet you'd like the Vieux Carre

    Thanks for the tip. I'm really a newcomer to the world of mixed drinks (other than the one or two kinds that I grew up with) and I'm interested to learn.

    Apparently, it is a Richmond gimlet. I'd never heard of such a thing. The family just had mint left over from mojitos the other night. My recipe was 2 oz. Bombay, 1 oz simple syrup, 1 oz fresh lime juice, long mint sprig, shaken.

    It was apparently created in Oregon less than 10 years ago so if your knowledge is based on classic cocktails it isn't suprising that you wouldn't have heard of it. I remember reading about it on Richard Morgenthaler's now-mostly-defunct-blog.

    I really know nothing about cocktails, modern or classic. But I like it. And now I'm glad I have an official name. Any cocktail recommendations?

    I have some Maker's Mark and ginger beer left over from the weekend. I'll be tossing those into a shaker with a couple dashes of Angostura for a revised Dark N Stormy (switching the rum out for bourbon).

    A lot, but that's an exception, recently, I swear! Well, I promise. I'm drinking some unobstrusive Lager right now...before that some red wine from Northern Italy, was pretty bad actually (for a change).
