Is it awkward to wear polos shirts (Cotton, wool, cashmere) with sport coats and suits? Like in Goodfellas. I like it.

I personally have never done it, maybe without the jacket but that's just me...

The guy in the picture pulls it off, I think, but personally I don't feel at ease with my long thin arms sticking out from a jacket sleeve without the company of a shirt cuff.

I guess it depends on how you are built - with a heavy bone structure you might pull it off. Being a "lanky bollox" (as an Irish woman once called me. We never married.) it does not look too good.

I would do it, if the suit were casual enough, e.g. cotton.

Not a traditionalist's look but common enough and well accepted in informal circumstances.

I'm not a fan with a suit. I have worn long sleeve cashmere polos with a SC in the winter. Here in Colorado that's still pretty formal :embar:

I agree on wearing it casually with the suit.

My favorite way to wear a suit is also without a jacket. Some people refer to this as "shirt & pants," but I still prefer "suit" because it sounds more professional.

I don't think the polo is meant to be worn with a suit like that.

This. I often wear polo shirts under sport coats made from linens, cottons and silks. Polo shirts under sport coats seem to echo the normally casual air of Spring/Summer. Pair them with chinos or jeans and a pair of loafers or drivers.

Wearing a polo with a suit, however, comes off as way too affected for my tastes.

    Spot on.

I think a polo with a suit can be done if you get the colors/texture right. Also, you've got to be one of the people who can pull of anything.

I have never even tried wearing suits w/ polos and do not intend to start anytime soon.

Would it make a difference if you were wearing a polo with shirt collars, like the ones Kent Wang produces?

Drakes have just released a range of long sleeve polos for this exact pairing. I'm not a huge fan of it personally but I think if you were going to try to pull it off following the lead of the guys at Drakes is probably your best bet at looking good.

Actually - now I think about it, I'm fairly against long sleeve polos in general. They have a weird ability to make your arms seem incredibly long and gangly; and as a long and gangly guy I end up with really weird proportions.
