I sat next to a couple recently minted legal drinkers at the airport on their way out to their school's bowl game destination and all they were talking about was how sick it was going to be to drink beer during their layover at 10:30 in the morning on a Tuesday. You could just tell they were proud as grandmothers to get carded skeptically so they could shove their DMV shit right back in the middle aged woman bartender's face. If giving legal drinking privileges to kids too fucking lame to do it without being fucking lame about it is unavoidable, we need to raise the drinking age to 40 or else open up some internment camps for brosephs in North Dakota.

or lower the drinking age so that it isn't such a big deal when they finally can.

Nope. Knowing him, that would have been my guess, too. He used to have legit drug problems, and I say that as someone who doesn't begrudge anyone having a good time. He's beyond all that now, aside from still being a pretty heavy drinker, though we'll see if that holds in the face of all this.

Not this, either. He's not married.

He did some stupid shit and wound up pleading to a couple felonies. He was fortunate and didn't get any jail time, but he's looking at a decade of high-level probation. Plus, it looks like he lost his job, which makes sense in the context of what went down. Ironically, he got this job about eight years ago after his former employer found out about another conviction and a family friend pulled some strings to help him out. He'd really excelled and promoted a good bit, which was part of why I thought he'd turned a corner, but I guess that's all gone now.

In this instance, a couple of felonies has gone a long way toward destroying everything, but one can't overstate the importance of a shitty father, priors, and likely undiagnosed mental illness.

if no drugs or chicks are involved, what's the point? I may as well soldier on as a suburban corporate drone.
