    Agreed.

    Agreed.

Seriously? A chilling effect? As compared to calling another forum participant "an asshole"?

I generally have a great deal of respect for your input to this thread, but I respectfully disagree with you on this one. I think some folks may have been quick to jump on the latter part of my comment without considering the context of my statement as a whole. But not everyone...

General point, not directed at and particular post ^

It is a big mistake to think all people think like you or should.
I have no idea what everyone wants from Styleforvm or what they get out of it. I am certainly not going to be offended if some people like to post pictures of themselves and things they own or if some people do not. Nor do I care if someone says they live in a 500,000 sf apartment and they really don't. Or if the say they do and they do. Or if they wont say. None of those things affect me in the least.

On the other hand, I do like to learn things, so it is annoying to read stuff written by people who should be reading not writing. But it is not that heard to figure out who those people are myself. Actually, the more useful thing is to focus on which posters to pay close attention to, rather than looking for the ones to ignore. The standouts in this thread are easy to spot.

Well please don't take my statement as any lack of enthusiasm for all ranges of watches posted and discussed here. I just find the AP/Patek etc. pics and discussion particularly interesting because I rarely encounter them outside of the forum.

    Alright, let's settle this.

gopherblue - are you telling me I am narcissistic and insecure in a way that's incredibly different from the rest of the community on SF?

Are you displeased that I used the term "asshole"? Are you prescribing proper decorum in this forum?

    Holy crap, zippy!

    ---

Personally, I think some of no frills' post was OTT, particularly the asshole part, but I think T&T does like to be snarky and stir the pot, and he does talk a big game, with little "proof" to go along with it (his decision, but its not shocking that that would come off to some as questionable).

So yeah, no one is "innocent" here.

    Lets move on now.

I'm not sure why you think that my observation was specifically directed at you.

I don't necessarily think it was appropriate (as you yourself belatedly realized, hence your follow-up post), but my point regarding Dino's comment was more with respect to his righteous indignation over what was a much less inflammatory--and much more constructive and non-specifically directed--observation.

    Not even a little.

^^^ If you have a beef with me, address me directly. If you enclose what I wrote in quotes and write some post, I somehow (perhaps stupidly) think you're addressing me.

This whole passive/aggressive "oh hey let me quote someone but please everyone don't take it out of context" back and forth confuses me.

So - you haven't answered my question, which I asked you point blank: are you saying I am narcissistic, insecure and lack self-awareness?

    Answer me directly.

Just to be clear: I do value this thread and many others on SF, warts and all. Frankly, I think many of the participants on this thread--yes, even you, Frilly :smarmy:--add a tremendous amount of insight, knowledge and value to the discussion. And, duh, of course I enjoy seeing all the watch pr0n. I'm hopefully on the cusp of making a grail kop for myself, if all goes well. Perhaps I'll even post a picture of it.

    ...Or twelve.

    Sorry...couldn't resist. :nest:

Also, to be clear, when I rephrased my initial post for culverwood, that was the sanitized, diplomatic version of what I wanted to express.

The spirit of what I wanted to say remains the same. ;)

The statement of one participant to another participant is an issue between 2 individuals.

Your statement --,"And still others who need to do so over and over and over again due to narcissism or insecurity or lack of self-awareness. [IMG]" appears directed toward all participants in the forum who have posted several pix here. I considered the context of your statement, but I don't see a different way to interpret this. Clearly we weren't supposed to infer that rather than all of us you were indirectly referring to Frills or Tried and True...you even questioned why Frills might think you were addressing him. So it would seem its directed at everyone here posting pix? In which case Newbies could see it as posting pix is frowned upon or considered a display of narcissism and insecurity. I didn't say that to upset you, merely that perhaps your statement may ward off newbies or those with thinner skin.

Personally, I don't see posting pix here as insecurity or lack of self-awareness, particularly among friends. I get emails from friends showing me things they are happy about be it vacations, acquisitions or other things happening in their lives. I don't consider that a result of insecurity, self awareness, or bragging...they're my friends and I'm happy for them and I like seeing the pix.

My righteous indignation, really? I'm not upset and I don't think my post was particularly harsh or unfair. I simply disagree with your comment and I didn't see how a comment slamming all photo posters is constructive.

    Alright guys, chill.

If I could refer everyone to the title of this thread. "The Watch Appreciation Thread". Let's just say for the purposes of discussion here that the best way to appreciate watches is to look at them. One could argue that discussing them works as well too, but hey if it works for the babe appreciation thread and the blond appreciation thread and the Asian appreciation thread..

So, given that as someone already pointed out there are typically two types of pictures one can post - stock pictures or pictures someone else has taken, sourced from somewhere else on the Internet, and pictures you have taken yourself. A quick Google search will reveal tons of the former, so where does that leave us? :teach:

Can we all just go back to appreciating watches now?

I guess "others" could be read to mean all others rather than some others.

The interweb clearly doesn't do nuance well...it is, afterall, a series of rubes.

    That's your entire sig!

Feeling narcissistic today during a long conference call, so I photographed my writing surface (Rhodia meeting book), watch (Rolex DSSD DBlue) and fountain pen (Nakaya Dorsal Fin v2 in Heki-Tamenuri (Urushi lacquer with green base and brown finish)).
