Cannot wait for this thread to explode when S3 premieres. I miss the needless nitpicking and general bitchiness by the middle-aged crowd.

12 Things We Learned During ‘The Walking Dead’ Panel [Comic-Con 2012]
Posted on Saturday, July 14th, 2012 by Germain Lussier

With the premiere of its third season, AMC’s The Walking Dead graduated to the head of the Comic-Con class. Previously relegated to the second largest room on the site, this year marked the zombie show’s triumphant debut in the 6,500 seat Hall H and the show’s producers and cast obliged with a panel filled with interesting, info, great clips and awkward moments.

After the jump, read the twelve things we learned about the third season of The Walking Dead.

1. International Zombie Infestation
No, not on the actual show. The third season of The Walking Dead will premiere at 9 p.m. October 14 in the U.S. However, the show has become such a worldwide phenomon it’ll then begin its international roll out on October 15, so the world won’t have to wait.

2. The zombies will continue to decompose
Effects guru and executive producer Greg Nicotero said because The Walking Dead will continue to unfold in linear fashion, the zombies start to look different this season. They’re beginning to decompose. “They’re hungry and there’s a lot of them,” he said. For the first tme they’ll also use animatronic puppets and Nicotero will direct an episode this year.

3. You can decapate three zombies at once
In the new trailer, you’ll meet Michonne (Danai Gurira), the masked character who saved Andrea (Laurie Holden) in the second season finale, and you’ll watch her decapitate three zombies at once with her katana sword.

4. There are many more survivors
Besides the prison, another new area we’ll explore is Woodbury, a seemingly utopian town, unaffected by zombies thanks to the rule of The Governor (David Morrissey). It looks like Norman Rockwell small town America but not all is as it seems.

5. The Ricktatorship will continue
Rick (Andrew Lincoln) seemed to flip a switch at the end of last season into a bit of a tyrannical leader and that’ll continue this year. The trailer shows him leading our heroes in a hostile takeover of a prison as their new home. And Lincoln read Cormac McCarthy’s The Road to prepare. Eventually, the Governor will eventually find out and try to push Rick and his friend outs.

6. Merle Dixon is Back
Previously revealed in online photos, Michael Rooker will return in the third season after being left for dead in season one. He’s sawed his own arm off and rocks a sword attached instead.

7. The action looks much more epic.
In the trailer, almost everyone has guns or knives and the fighting isn’t only limited to humans versue zombies. Humans will fight humans as well with guns, bows and arrows, paintball guns (or at least something that looks like it) and basically, it’s mass carnage.

8. Things will get much darker
Walking Dead creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman said, of the difference between second and third season that “The farm was a walk in the park compared to where we are now.”

9. Everyone is cold
Shooting in Atlanta over the summer, heat used to be the problem for the cast and crew. However, now that much of the season takes places inside a prison, they actually find the air conditioning to be too cold.

10. Church over Skype
Many of the foreign actors, such as Lincoln, Morissey, and Lauren Cohan do weekly Sunday Skype Sessions to practice their southern American accents.

11. Daryl and Merle fans will get backstory
Just not on the show. Kirkman said a new Walking Dead video game follows the two brothers through their early trials in the zombie apocalypse.

12. Prepubescent girls love Glenn
Several times during the panel, young (very young) girls would ask questions of actor Steven Yeun, who plays Glenn. It was awkward, funny, and curious that they’d be allowed to watch this gory show.

'Walking Dead' Comic-Con Panel: Michonne, the Governor, Woodbury...and Merle!
by Darren Franich

The Big Revelations: Dead finally has a premiere date for its third season: the show is returning on Sunday, Oct. 14th, at 9 p.m. Most of the broad strokes of the new season were already revealed before the panel, so fans were excited to get a look at the season’s two new settings: The survivor colony-town Woodbury, and a zombie-infested prison.

Footage Screened: The panel featured the debut of a lengthy season 3 trailer. The video showed the Grimes Gang invading the prison and clearing out all the undead. Some of these scenes looked straight out of Aliens, with the cast going down into the shadowy depths of the prison. (Many, many zombies got killed.) [Watch the trailer here!].

The trailer established that, at least at first, season 3 will follow two separate narrative strands. While Rick’s people invade the prison, Andrea and Michonne get captured by armed men and taken to Woodbury, where they meet David Morrissey’s Governor. It’s very clear that they’re taking the Governor in a very different direction from his comic book incarnation: Morrissey seems to be playing the character very smooth. (He seems like a corrupt politician, whereas the graphic novel version was more of a mustached Machiavelli.) At one point the Governor said “We’re gonna take back what’s ours,” and we saw him in a staredown with Rick. So expect tensions to rise high quickly.

The video also took fans inside of the mysterious helicopter. Men dressed in army gear were flying it, although don’t expect to see that bird in the air for long: We heard one of them yell “Mayday, Mayday!” and saw evidence of a crash later in the video.

The video ended with a shot of Michael Rooker’s long-absent fan-favorite character, Merle Dixon. He said, “How’s about a big hug for your old pal Merle?” In his left hand he held a gun. You’ll recall that the character sawed off his own right hand back in season 1 — we only saw him for a few seconds, but I’m pretty sure that he’s converted his right arm into a gun-arm, Grindhouse-style.

Snap Judgment: The trailer looked fantastic and seemed to follow through on the producer’s promise that the show will continue its current wave of momentum — good news for everyone, after a dawdling season 2. With all the emphasis on zombie-killing action, it was a bit disappointing that we didn’t get to see more of Michonne and the Governor, so it’s hard to know how the show’s interpretation of the characters will vary from the comic book. Still, if nothing else, the new season promises about 5,000 percent more katana head-slices than last season. Huzzah!

Most Incisive Audience Question: The very last question of the panel came from a lady who bravely asked what we’ve all been wondering: “Why do you write the women on the show so scary? They’re always lurking around… They tell Rick to take over, but why don’t they ever do it themselves?” Showrunner Mazzara wisely reacted with a canny non-response: “That’s a great idea. Maybe they will.”

Least Incisive Audience Question: A starstruck 12-year-old girl expressed her love for Steven Yuen. Then she asked a question, and this happened:

Starstruck 12-Year-Old: “If you’re stuck in a real-life apocalypse, what do you think are the chances of our surviving?”
Steven Yuen: “Me personally? Or all of us?”
Starstruck 12-Year-Old: (swooning) “I don’t really care.”

The Winner of the Panel: Steven Yuen managed to steal the heartthrob trophy from Norman Reedus (another starstruck teenager expressed her love for him later). But without a doubt, the winner of this panel was Mazzara. The new showrunner didn’t speak too much, but the sheer amount of excitement coursing through the auditorium confirmed that all the moves he made after the departure of Frank Darabont — killing off characters and generally getting things moving again — paid off.

SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2012: Highlights From THE WALKING DEAD Panel
Not lucky enough to be at this year's San Diego Comic-Con? Fear not! Here are all the highlights from yesterday's The Walking Dead panel, including quotes from the cast and some tantalising new details about what we should expect from the third season.
Josh Wilding - 7/14/2012

One of the most exciting things to come out of this year's San Diego Comic-Con so far is undoubtedly the season three trailer for The Walking Dead. That was first revealed during the panel yesterday afternoon which was moderated by Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick and included Glen Mazzara, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert and Greg Nicotero, as well as cast members Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Norman Reedus, Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira and David Morrissey. The details below come from several different sources, but many thanks to Sports Mole for the specific quotes.

• Robert Kirkman: "We open on a scene of I can't tell you, and it quickly transitions into a scene of you'll have to wait and see. We have a prison, that we've built. It's pretty amazing. It doesn't look like a backlot."

• The season will be much faster paced, with those on the panel comparing it to the far more action-packed latter half of season two, with the momentum remaining consistent throughout.

• Greg Nicotero: Every year we want to show and refine and determine what we love about certain zombies. We're always changing the contact lenses and the dentures, we put bald caps on the guys. We really wanna sell this year that they're decomposing, emaciated and hungry. And there's a lot of them. We're going to do some animatronic puppets this season that we didn't get to do before. We're going to keep you guessing."

• Nicotero's directorial debut (episode six) will feature THREE iconic moments from The Walking Dead comic book series.

• Norman Reedus: "He's a guy that's under the thumb of his big brother Merle. Being away from Merle, he's finding himself needed and appreciated, and making bonds with these people. He'd fight to the death for this people. He's kind of growing up. I love playing him."

• Laurie Holden: "At the end of season two, I was saved by this wonderful woman, Michonne. It's a very different season for Andrea. She's met this alpha female and they become very good friends and they watch each other's backs. It's wonderful storytelling as the battle the elements in this apocalyptic world."

• Danai Gurira and David Morrissey talked about being welcomed to the show by their fellow cast members, with the latter stating: "I came into the show as a fan, I've known Andy for a long time, I just loved it. When the opportunity came I was very excited. The thing they can never prepare you for is walking onto set and discovering they have a great crew. People want to be there. They want to work on this show."

• Andrew Lincoln: "Rick has isolated himself from the group and his marriage. That's the way that he is protecting everybody. It's a really interesting way to start the season. I certainly think this season you meet him at a place where he has been pushing people away to protect his son, and in so doing he loses his humanity. Rick has isolated himself from the group and his marriage, and that's the way he's protecting everyone. I'm currently going batshit crazy by the way, the last few weeks [of filming] I'm going bananas."

• During the fan questions, several young girls professed their love for Steven Yeun, leading moderator Chris Hardwick to joke, "We know your demographic now Steven, and we know you should not now be allowed at Legoland."

• Robert Kirkman was asked about the chances of introducing Daryl into the comic book series, but he adamantly stated that it will NOT happen as he has the series planed out well into the future.

• Sarah Wayne Callies: "I think Lori did everything she could to handle Shane. She brought it to Rick - she didn't tell him to kill him, she told him to watch his back, which wound up right, because Shane tried to kill him and the right man won that fight."

Drinking and ironing and watching the marathon. Am I the only one who likes the redneck jerk the best?
