Here's a Raleigh LTD-3 I picked up last summer. I put a fresh Brooks saddle on it along with some new rubber. Otherwise, all it needed was a good cleaning.

Sorry, I must have missed this!

If you're looking for some sort of database that would apply to all European brands like Union tags, it would be hard to find something similar. If you're looking for how to identify quality, you'll have to get to know your better local tailors and look at things like zippers and snaps for brands. The vintage stuff is great and (generally) of high quality.

The thing I always look out for is polyester. When polyester became popular, it was blended with everything and many vintage pieces don't have fabric content tags. You'll just have to get a good feel for it so you can tell if something contains it. I was thrown off by a vintage jacket that was really well made and looked great. It actually had a content tag and I found out it was wool, silk and a healthy dose of polyester.

Black numbering on union tags date them how far back? I have a real nice 3 pc suit I may want to contribute to the thread. Just want to make sure it's old enough lol.

Black vs. red numbering isn't a precise way to date things. Red is earlier and black is later, but AFAIK there wasn't a specific date when they stopped using red and switched to black.

the (R) in the lower left corner is a more precise guide - it means that label is from 62-76. Given the black numbers, probably later in that range, but I don't think there's a way to nail it down closer than that.

Awesome thanks. Is there a list / link to dating tags like this for future reference?

I haven't often seen union labels on non-US clothes other than those from Canada.

    Style points suggest early-mid 70s.

    Very nice package of details.

One odd thing is the way the pattern down the center back seam gradually stops matching. Either the wearer's posture was varied, or perhaps the weave of the plaid itself varied over the course of the mill run.

Got this awesome FU windowpane 3 piece USA made suit last week. Dates to late 60s/early 70s (lapels suggest 70s). Love the check on it, flat front pants.

Just listed a suit with the same label.

Listing includes a link to an article about "Reagan's Tailor" from 1987.

That's a beauty. I bet those buttons are even older - you see them frequently on frock coats and very old tailcoats from the '20s and earlier. Tailor could've had them sitting around in stock for a while.

    Follow-up on this.

After 2 months, I have finally heard back from a rep at Brooks Brothers. This coat and label pre-dates their records. I'm now waiting to hear exactly how far back their records go.
