If you have more than $500 in non-cash donations, there is a separate form to fill out that you itemize each individual donation instance, and it asks what the original purchase price of the items were. It's a dumb question that doesn't change anything on the return, probably the IRS trying to make sure people aren't deducting full retail. My rule of thumb is 5x what the deduction is. Unless a client specifically has a number in mind for it (or God forbid actually calculated it before letting me tell them it doesn't matter), 5x deduction is what I put in.

    http://satruck.org/donation-value-guide

I refer clients to this to value their items. Or, if a client just gives me a receipt with quantities and descriptions, I take the average of low and high from this site and use that.

Today's incredibly meager haul - only hit one thrift, the rest was from a mom & pop resale shop, one small-town antique store, and a Habitat for Humanity store.

I'm not much into quilts, but this book is pretty cool - like the book version of what Fat Possum Records did for unknown blues musicians back in the day. Just checked - it's collectible! But will be gifting to my mom, who has been published many times over as a quilter, and she'd totally love it.

Ahem... picked this up for two bucks at the Habitat for Humanity resale store. Appears unused (thank god).

And saved myself a good hundo by fixing it myself vs. getting an electrician. I have a healthy respect for [fear of] electricity but after getting my tax bill I figured it was worth a DIY shot. Old GFCI outlet I cooked last autumn and left me with no working outlets in the garage:

Yeah, today was a rude awakening, man. After I got my 1099-K, then deducted my expenses, and my cost for tax prep was $250 more than last year, AND I owed a pile to the IRS, I got to thinking: Was all that work last year even worth it? [cue the consignors who who will say "NO send me your stuff!"]. But the shopping part is fun, I get out & about, and it keeps me from smoking crack, so....

Thanks for the insight - I learned a lot today...this was my first time with a 1099-K, itemized deductions, having to claim 1099-G's from last year as income, surprised that I had to pay the self-employment tax, etc etc blah blah blah. Next year I'll have the home office deduction as well (I'll take the flat $1500 thank you). But jeez I don't envy you this time of year.

Got a very hung-over shave & haircut this morning and hit up one spot by the barber.

Twice in two days I've had to leave Isaia ties behind due to condition. hurt me in the pit of my stomach. Glad to see they got a lot of use though.

Yeah, I finally cracked 70 hours this week. It sucks. But being in upstate NY, I'd rather be working like this now when it's shitty out and have the rest of the year be a breeze. I work 35 hrs a week and get 6 weeks of vacation between April 16th and December 31.

Thanks! Bummed it wasn't my size. I've been looking for one like this for awhile.

Tagged as 40R. PM if you want more info.
