Worst day of thrifting ever.

I popped into a GW on the way home last night, just for a quick look. The store was mostly junk and very crowded. A morbidly obese woman in a powerchair (one of those motorized scooters) ran into me. She nailed my right foot, putting a HUGE gouge in the toe of my favorite pair of shoes, my Carmina captoes. GODDAMMIT.

I left empty handed because everything was either junk or marked up to eBay prices.

Got in the car only to realize I had lost my newly acquired Georg Jenson tie bar.

FML.

I think I would be just as pissed if not more about this! The shoes you could replace...finding another Jensen tie bar is not going to be easy!

Anyone ever see a fake Borrelli tie? "hand-stitched chinese polyester!
There was one of these at the goodwill near my house, except the tie was incredibly ugly in addition to being "hand-stitched chinese polyester"

Today was a good day.

With my pick-ups I should be able to replace both the Carmina's and the tie bar.

Pics to follow.

This is the site we use for vintage: http://vintagefashionguild.org/label-resource/gucci/

There is a great listing from A-Z.

Be aware there is also a trend of people taken labels from trashed luxury designer items and sewing them into other items to fake. Ask the store what proof they have for authenticity. They should be able to explain and show using the web. You can also join the Vintage Forum and have them authenticate it. Anything we posted takes about 24 hours to get input from industry insiders.

Hello fellow thrifters!

I come with a question today....

I recently stopped by a consignment store and my GF fell in love with a Gucci dress they had - the price is more than I would like it to be - but she quite likes it, so I am wondering if anyone can verify authenticity of this dress from pictures..... and maybe a ballpark of what they think it should be worth incase I really am getting ripped off....

Thanks a ton!

Here it is: (Sorry about the crappy pics)

True. I have a pair of Studios that are still very nice, though.

Great find.

She just sat there and scowled at me, as if I was a jerk for being in her way. Like it was my fault for standing there.

I kept my cool, didn't react to the fact that she'd just nearly ruined a $600 pair of shoes (that I bought new, at retail, because I just got sick of waiting to find a pair in a thrift)

Lesson learned.

I will

1) NEVER PAY RETAIL AGAIN

2) Keep a change of shoes in the car for stops like this

3) Remove tie bars, ties, cufflinks, watches etc before getting elbow deep in a rack full of pee stained clothes

BTW- if anybody happens to come across a Georg Jenson tie bar in an Austin area Goodwill, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know.

Yeah, I remove everything in my pockets except for my wallet, cell phones, and keys.

Mainy's haul doesn't open for me. One time it expanded but the only pix that I got to was the shirts with VV and Isaia. Now, it goes back up to the top of the page.

This always happen to me when there's an internet connection issue. You have to wait until the page loads completely before you can unspoil any spoilers. Other wise, it will just take you to the top of the page. Annoying!

(Excuse the poor knot...)

(...and the scuffs)

Thrift fit. Everything thrifted by me, minus the shoes—a generous gift from Randy.

Oxxford SC, recent label
Ermenegildo Zegna shirt
Hermes tie
Brooks Brothers flannels
Allen Edmonds McAllister

Cost: $28 (+ ~$110 tailoring)

That is the most awesome Hermes design I've every seen!

Hmmm, Kiton 90/10 vicuna suit, Lobbs Captoes, Kiton shirt, Hermes Tie = $7K+$1K+$700+$200 =$8.9K MSRP. Best I could do regarding thrifted only merchandise. I could cheat and add a Hermes Cashmere overcoat but I never wear that thing nor would do so due to weather here. Adding in overcoat could make me go close to $15K.

On flip side, cheapest but still quality = BB 1818 suit, AE Park Aves, Hugo Boss shirt, Brooks Brothers Tie = $900+$300+$125+$60 = $1385.

On examination, cheapest possible thrifted smart outfit still priced over $1K based on MSRP.

Don't forget those Versace design tighty whities with match socks! That should bump it up by another $500!

I will post some pics, but I got an Oxxford cashmere DB overcoat last week, as well. I dropped it off at my tailor to re-sew a button on there. I'm excited to see how that does online!
