Had a pretty fantastic day.

Started out by seeing @silverwarebandit 's post that included a hat trick of Alden shell. Sent him a PM to ask about availability, especially of his PTBs. Not my size. In light of that, I decided to make a run during lunch and found these:

My own hat trick of Alden shell, in my size. Left are short wings in excellent condition, middle are PTBs in need of a new heel and a serious cleaning (made for Brooks Bros), and right are saddles (though no contrasting color on the upper). This makes 4 pairs of Alden shell I've found in the last week, having only found about three more pairs of shell of any brand previously.

Other highlights from the day:

Really cool vintage made in USA Woolrich that's all mine.

Vintage made in USA Eddie Bauer with Harris Tweed and suede detailing. First EB I've ever bought.

Action back!

Schott down puffer that needs a surface stain removed

Brooks Bros made in USA with a great liner.

And why not?

Other finds from today included another Zegna windowpane SC in Trofeo wool, great BB silk/wool glen plaid SC from 2012, and some very nice Vanderbilt University sport coat buttons. Also found some genuine horn SC buttons on a jacket to be put on a solid navy Suitsupply orphan to convert it to SC status.

THAT'S NOT ALL:

Last week I finished a huge event that my company put on and we had record numbers. One of my board members decided he'd like to thank me. I'm typing on a brand new MacBook Air and have a Suitsupply Napoli suit on the way to me. So not exactly thrifted, but free counts, right?

I'd buy it. How bad were the stains?
Medium bad. You can kind of see one of them on the lower right quarter. Sounds like @Takai is going to go check it out and perhaps cop for himself. Almost bought but just wasn't confident enough in my stain removing abilities.

Patagonia fleece lined jacket.and a Stonehaven tweed overcoat with zipper lining. Don't know much about Stonehaven but it looked like a good quality piece. Am I wrong?
Don't know why people seem to be getting rid of their winter stuff just before winter????

I don't know about local thrifts in your neighborhood, but my local thrifts store tons of winter stuff off-site all summer, with bare-bones stock from spring through mid-October - and then put away all the summer stuff and rack up the heavy coats and sweaters as the weather turns cold.

I also found a Thorngate US Naval Academy wool coat! Damn thing ways a TON for a coat!!
Those buttons aren't original, it should have gold buttons,.

Ran into 3 pro flippers on my only stop today, great for conversation, lousy for finding stuff. Decided to do a little social engineering and asked an employee if they had any ties in the back. Let me sift through a huge box:

I've done worse, 30 minutes well spent.

Yea I thought those buttons looked off. Otherwise nice coat but, I think it's going back. Has a tear in the lining and those NON original buttons.

Did I goof?

I machine wash all my shirts. I don't dry them (I let them hang), but yeah. Dry cleaning fries shirts. They have to be cleaned too often.

I just tend to stay away from machines with good shirts, or even decent quality shirts. Machine washing just adds wear over time slowly... Fuzzes / naps the fabric, causes wear around the seams... Can sometimes pull threads and stitching, and break buttons. Machine drying is way worse, but just machines in general are bad.

I hand-wash all my shirts... J.crew, Norse Projects T's, Zegnas, etc. The only stuff I machine wash is like socks / boxer shorts / Hanes T's / etc. It's more work and time, but the shirts stay in much better shape over the years. There's less wear / shrinkage, and no broken buttons. I hang-dry and then hand-press.

And yes, Dry-Cleaning is terrible for shirts. They rarely take the time to actually "Clean" the shirts, and whatever they do to "Press" the shirts just causes burn marks and shiny-ness. I will never send any shirts to a cleaners. Will always hand-wash and hand-press each of my shirts personally, until I can pay + train someone to do it properly.

+1 on hand washing. I wash my shirts when I'm showering. I'll soak them in "the method" and rinse them with me in the shower then hang dry them. Works like a charm!
