Is this buffalo hide? Looks pretty good, especially at the price.

Looks far too clean and smooth for buffalo.
Buffalo usually has far more texture.

Vertice lists them as cracked bison.

Not to be a dick but in terms of taxonomy I'm pretty sure that buffaloes and bison are different animals. :embar:
As others have pointed out it's probably reverse, not "cracked".
Anyway, I wouldn't be terribly concerned about the actual price you paid, as long as they're not your run of the mill boots and you think they are worth posting. Grats on your purchase.

anytime anyone starts a phrase with that, it usually leads to something bad, but in your case you are all good :D

Don't worry, you're not being a dick, I was not specific enough. It depends what human language and dialect we're speaking and which genus and species the hide are from, and ultimately we don't know. Species-wise, American bison (Bison bison) = American buffalo.

It's also unrelated, but there's always this article to read whenever talking about buffalo.

Not creating new patterns doesn't stop anyone from using old patterns.

    So good..

Some parts were not completely dyed, so it has this blue-ish pale color peeking through. Not sure if I should do anything about it.

The age old question: to vibram or not?
I received my pair of Guidi 988 and have been wearing them fresh out the box.
Put heel taps on them today after a few wears.
Going to wear them like this for a bit then perhaps vibram.
    Def helps with the traction.

Is there a good reason to not add? Better resale value and less worrying. I usually add a vibram heel and a thin topy rubber sole to most of my leather soled boots.

If you notice the difference between vibram and topy, you're paying too much attention to the bottom of your shoes.

Vibram and Topy are just brands. Both manufacturers have a number of different products for different uses. I know also other high quality manufacturers from Italy which are used by some cobblers.

I tried on a pair of Guidi backzips and there was an extra cm of length, resulting in slight heel slippage. Should I size down by half?
