I personally never use anything on shell and feel people overall baby shell too much. The leather was used by mail carriers for eons. I will admit to swims on my tasseled loafers to keep the tassels looking decent. But not always. Rain, sleet, snow, this is the reason to own shell to begin with. The stuff is tough as hell. As for water marks, they eventually dissipate over time. Not gonna order $1000 boots to balk at a little weather. My 2 cents. Good day to all!!! Killer thread... and costly .....

I'm in this school of thought as well. I seek out my shell when its snowing or raining. I'll brush em back to health when needed but they can take a beating.

I see the logic in yall's posts. People do on occasion tend to over care and pamper their shell given how durable it actually is, but I figure whats the harm in a $15 "insurance policy". Maybe its babying, but it doesn't seem to have any noticeable effects on the shell's appearance. So i say why not. A little more peace of mind is worth something.

    Gentlemen,

Thank you for your helpful replies. I just swooped up a bottle of Alden Leather Defender.

I normally use paste wax as a barrier between my cordovan and the elements. But yesterday I was caught in a rainy situation that I was not at all prepared for.

I am of the camp that says $15 on a pair of shells that cost much more than that is a great deal for the piece of mind.

I have several pair of cordovan's (one in every shade) that I plan to treat with this product. That way my options are open.

    Thanks again.

Doesn't Alden use Leather Defender themselves when they 'prep' their shell?

Epaulet should have some, although right now it looks like their inventory is limited: http://epauletnewyork.com/collections/footwear/products/alden-snuff-suede-plain-toe-blucher

The only difference with the Jcrew makeups is that sometimes those are exclusive to JCrew. For example, JCrew used to sell an unlined suede dover with brass eyelets, instead of hidden eyelets like the ones you linked to.

I agree...specially on lighter colored shell. You spill anything with color on whiskey or ravello and don't remove it quickly...some of the stain will stay. Thats a risk you run anytime in public and in a bar or bathroom, or even dinner. I agree water spots/bumps will likely come out, but anything else it might be an issue. Leather defender does not stay on shell long term. It's just a quick mist and wipe, I retreat anytime I know I will be in the rain and keep a bottle in my car with a cloth towel. I'm not afraid to abuse my shoes or boots...however I don't think a lack of maintenance is something I subscribe to on shell. I agree shell is tough and is a great option for bad weather...so is my GoreTex but I wash my jackets and always retreat my jackets as suggested with DWT.
