Apolgies in advance if this question has already been answered.

I'm looking for an Alden Chukka boot for everyday use, so I was originally looking for some kind of rubber sole. I found the dark brown chukka at Alden of Carmel with a commando sole, which looks a bit clunky. Next best thing seems to be the Cognac Chukka with the Flex Welt sole at Leather Soul. Can anyone who wears the flex welt sole tell me how comfortable they find it to be?

I have a pair of double leather soled Aldens and while I love those shoes I'm looking for something more comfortable in this pair. Also how does the flex welt sole hold up compared to the commando?

    Thanks for the advice.

^^ Flex-welt soles are ridiculously comfortable.

Does anyone know who does a mafoofanesque #8 Shell Longwing on a single sole, preferably on a single sole or flex welt? Would a cordovan shoe look dressy enough for a suit on a flex welt? Barrie Last preferred.

Nobody does anything similar to foof's longwings.

I've seen cordovan paired up with the flex welt before, but it didn't seem right.

Super tough question to answer given the nature of feet. What part of your foot is so wide you need an E? Do you have a thick, meaty, Australian ankle or a thin ankle with wide-spread New England duck toes? Where is the shoe moving around on your foot? 9E in Trubalance / 9E in Plaza --> 8.5E in Barrie sounds conventional enough.

What's the worst can happen if you wear them a year and they never feel great? Consolation prize: a good excuse to buy another pair?

That's not the worst thing that can happen to someone.

For the record, very pleased with the sizing on my whiskey LWB. Super comfortable and beautiful shoes. Good advice on the 8.5E.

Just a random question. Not looking for a debate on the merits of leather sole vs. commando.
Does anyone else wish Alden of Carmel would offer more boots with a leather sole? I have a pair in the commando but it just doesn't give me that same feeling of "just right" that my shell indies do. If they came with a leather sole I would own a pair of the AF 84 already.

I've asked him about this before, and his response was that it was his personal preference. You could always have the commando soles removed as well (they're just stuck on top the regular leather soles).

Between Leather Soul's dressier styles, and Carmel's casual models, I think there is a good balance between the two.

I agree with you in essence but just wish they came the way I want them from the start. I also would like a regular close heel welt on some of his wingtip boots rather than the 360 welt. Just bitching cause I'm bored.

I've been seeing more references to a "Lexington Last" on some Japanese sites lately. Does anyone know if this is another last that Alden's pulled out of their archives, or are the Japanese just giving another last a different name?

I have a question about the Leydon last. I wear an 8.5D in the Barrie last and the heel is snug while the forefoot is very roomy. Would an 8.5D in the Leydon last be too small for me?

You might want to try a 9D in the Leydon.

That's what I'm thinking but my 8.5D Barrie's have a lot of room in the front. I'm also a US 8.5D in some BB Peal C&J shoes on the 325 last so wondering if I can fit the 8.5D Leydon....

It is an old last, long nose, squared off. Not my cup o tea. Japan did a few shoes on it years ago and it didn't really fly.

I would try the 9D, definitely not 8.5D.
