Reading the comments in that link, I found this post by LS interesting:

Sorry, Alden no longer allows retailers to post rare shells on their website. Some still do but they are going against Alden’s internet policies. Please follow us on Instagram for more pictures of our offerings. - See more at: http://leathersoulhawaii.com/2014/02/20/alden-shoe-unlined-cxl-ptb-lsdt-lbh/#sthash.DzXFP8OJ.dpuf

This is true - Alden SF and NYC pulled their rare offerings from their website sometime last year based on this policy...

^^I'm not sure I understand their reasoning for having the photos pulled or not allowed. I suppose they have their reasons, but I'd like to see the rare shell colors personally.

Why limit that portion of your models only to people "who know"? I understand that they can't meet with demand, so I guess why advertise them?? Dunno.

Well now this is something I can get behind. Stitchning on the toes should only be seen by those who are ready for it. I for one, am not ready for it yet.

I strongly suspect this is an attempt to limit "poaching" of rare shell by overseas buyers (who may have agents stateside). Forcing customers to make contact by phone, email or in person presumably allows for some control over who retailers sell to.

I suppose just putting sizes 10-12 would put an end to that [IMG]

Hey guys, what is the price of the LS Ultimate Indy?

I am having a debate, I really love the offering from LS as I think the commando sole is awesome but I think I could get the regular Indy on the Neocork for $495 CAD here in town. I am not sure now that with the USD pricing, shipping, duties etc that the Ultimate Indy is worth the extra dough. What do you guys think? Are their other differences between the two boots that I may not be aware of?

The price last year was $525 USD. May be more this year.

I'm having the same debate, buy now with neocork soles and have commando put on after that sole has worn down or preorder the LS Ultimate Indy's and wait 3/4 of a year. Any advice?

With black tankers, color 8 tankers and black NST, I have avoided the color 8 NST, but the photos from you and others seem to confirm it is at least a top 5 alden model, maybe top 3...

I guess it depends on how badly you want the commando sole and how soon. If you wait for the LS version, you'll have the commando sole sooner, haha. But you'll have no boot in the mean time. I, personally, would take the Indy either way.

As Alden is unwilling and/or unable to meet demand for rare shells, they probably want to both limit international / eBay poachers as well as minimize the number of inquiries they must get about doing one-off MTOs of rare colors or about where to find rare colors in general. Pictures or no pictures, Alden and its retailers have no issue selling all the rare cordovan shoes they make, and I guess it is true that rare colors aren't really available to most buyers anymore, so why advertise them

Yeah I am kind of thinking the same, just enjoy the Indy as is and maybe get the commando when a resole is needed.

At $525 USD plus shipping, taxes and brokerage fees I could be up to close to $700 CAD for those Ultimate Indys. Not worth it since the Indys in town would run me $520 after tax, I already have a few pairs of flat waxed laces to make them look like the LS version anyways hahaha.

I just got an email back from O'Connors here in town saying they have them in stock in my size (I think, haven't tried the Trubalance last yet), so you guys may be seeing pics of my new Indys shortly.

Honestly, it sounds like a no brainer to me. I would not pay the premium. 1/2 down should be about right. Good luck!

Someone posted in here last week that Alden will only resole with the original sole. I took that to mean they wouldn't let you change from a regular sole to a commando sole or a crepe sole, etc. Was that incorrect or are we now talking about going the BNelson route with these Indys?

If I understand correctly, your options may be limited: Alden restoration will only do the same same sole as the original. B Nelson will switch soles, but doesn't do the Alden split-style commando, but does a full lug sole instead. It sounds like Moulded shoe perhaps does the commando, but will they switch it from another sole?
