Leather Soul and Epaulet have both put out longwings on single flex welt. http://epauletshop.tumblr.com/post/2863349324/alden-westegg http://leathersoulhawaii.com/2011/08/09/alden-shoes-black-flex-longwing-lsw/

I wear my Indy boots on Commando on a daily basis in the Northeast. Haven't noticed any adverse effects yet.

May be my favorite Alden suede makeup (aside from MrDv's grail; Alden for J Crew snuff suede/color 8 saddles). This is an awesome shoe with tremendous comfort! I don't think Alden makes a LWB on a single leather sole [edit: I had not read the posts that followed the original, before writing this post. However, the double leather-sole-rule-of-thumb for Alden LWBs is pretty reliable. As mentioned though, there are some exceptions.]. Additionally, I don't think Alden makes a bal/oxford on anything other than a single leather sole [edit: This rule-of-thumb, I am pretty sure is even more solid]. I suppose the point being that more formal dress shoes typically come with a single leather sole, and dress shoes on the less formal end of the spectrum can come with a double leather sole. Not sure this answers your question...

In any case, enjoy these beauties OFTEN and in great health, my friend!

MWS is right, and the term can be misleading, In fact, instead of "double leather sole" I have heard certain cobblers say (paraphrase) "so you want a leather outsole, with the addition of a midsole." The midsole is what MWS has deemed the "first sole" above.

This is a good point. For whatever reason, most manufacturers have fallen into the habit of calling the extra layer on Goodyear-welted shoes a "double-sole" and on Blake/Rapid constructed shoes, they call it a "midsole." Both are describing the same thing and it is a case of semantics.

Guys-I'm non-Alden today, but I am wearing brandy. Thought you would like to see some custom cowboy boots. The tops were originally designed for Roy Rogers. I changed things up and went with Brandy full quill ostrich. Cost is about 4 pairs of shell!

    See Ya,
    Steve

I agree that I think the shoe shown in the picture is double leather sole, athough it might be double waterlock.

I believe Leffot's suede LWB are single leather (again, perhaps single waterlock) sole.

MWS does it again with his seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of shoe construction. Thank you for another insight.

I live in Fly-0ver Land which is not solidly in the midst of Snow and Muck Season. I am lucky enough to have some boots in cxl and cordovan with commando soles. These shoes do the job in providing traction outside and they look great with business casual. On a recent nasty day I wore with a suit some color 8 cordovan short wings with commando soles, and they looked great. In other words, Alden's shoes and boots with commando soles do the job, I find.
