I thought someone would say that. :) I'd like to, but I think I can only justify keeping one of them, considering they're very similar.

The thing is, he already has color 8.

I find cigar at as versatile as color 8. You can't go wrong with cigar or ravello longwings. Whiskey is a bit more advanced.

I find uses for both pairs - I understand the overlap but it offers good variety. I didn't think I'd enjoy whiskey as much as I have. Probably won't find them again for a while too...

Yeah, part of me thinks I'll be kicking myself for letting go of one of them.

if i see any rare shell available in my size, i jump on it. i figure with the regular price increases and scarcity, i can always sell them for what i paid down the line as long as i've only worn them a few times.

Guys, I think the reason #8 is more common is more to do with actual leather production. The reason whiskey and ravello is harder to come by (from my understanding) is because the shell needs to have less grain imperfections than a darker color because it's easier to dye over them on say #8 or black.

    exactly right.

    edit...

it's a combination, but you're mostly correct. in order of "easiest" to produce... it would go:

    1. Black
    2. Color 8
    3. Cigar
    4. Ravello
    5. Whiskey

that being said, i think Color 8 is more common than Black because it's both more versatile, and an Alden staple.

That was me, and only for 7.5D... since I guess it isn't a commonly stocked size.

I have been told that shell is in really short supply right now so the less common sizes are almost MTO.

My 2 cents on the matter ....

The lust for rare shell is a curious thing. In some ways I feel sorry for the fellas that stumble across this thread and think only in terms of whiskey and ravello (and who could blame them, given the comments made on here some days).

I wear Aldens for business and casual, and in a variety of settings. I have various models of each color.

Leaving black shell out of the analysis altogether (and I like black shell - wearing the Alden for BB perf captoe bal today), Color 8 is the most versatile, followed closely be cigar. Then it's ravello, followed by whiskey.

The ravello LWB may be the best looking shell LWB (in terms of uniqueness), but if forced to choose I would take my cigar LWB over it. And I own both. The whiskey LWB, which I also own, is a grail shoe for some Alden fans. That is fine, and it is a very nice shoe. I wear mine maybe 5 times a year. I would easily choose any of the colors, including black, in the LWB, over whiskey. And the preceding sentence was not meant to offend anyone - just calling it like I see it. :D

For someone just starting out, I would suggest getting whiskey after about number 10. Get some color 8 and cigar first (and black if you are so inclined), and then move on to ravello and whiskey. And also, to the extent possible, learn your correct size.

The Plaza is a nice shape for any makeup IMO. I have the Plaza in shoes and boots, shell and calf and suede. Like them all ...

Have to second the opinion that Cigar shell LWBs are very versatile, perhaps even more so than #8. This is especially true for more casual outfits.

I think cigar is at least as versatile as color 8... After all, it's dark brown, which is generally regarded as the most versatile show color. If more cigar models had dark edge soles, they would be even more versatile (similar to the RL Marlow models).
