Thanks Uncle Mac- they had a great start (wink) and hopefully have many more years to darken gracefully.

And welcome back- we're always happy to see your great shoes (and argyles)

I'm not sure if the Alden last was named for them but I do know they were a prominent brand a couple of generations ago. They were next door to the original J. Press in New Haven. In an interview last year Richard Press mentioned that he bought his shoes there.

Here is a link to another story on the demise of the store:

I'm surprised they don't call him Mac Daddy instead.

Every time I used to check this thread and read someone saying "thank you, Uncle" i felt violated.

Can someone post up any first hand info on the "flex welt sole" that Alden puts on the Leffot day tripper boot?

I'm wondering if there's any difference between that and the standard neocork sole that's commonly seen on the Indy 403 and 405

Flex welt sole is nothing at all like the neocork sole.
It's an oiled single leather sole (although I think there's a double sole version).
It's rather soft and flexible as you may guess. Same sole is on the unlined chukkas.

Is it rigid enough to put a topy on with any success? I'm a notorious toe dragger so if it doesn't have the durability of the neocork sole I may be hosed

I guess since it's more or less like a single leather sole.
I just wonder how well it'll adhere since the sole is oiled. It does seem to be more durable than a regular leather sole though.

I have 4 Aldens on pre-order right now. I really need to stop buying and just wait it out for my shoes to arrive....either that or I need to go into a store and buy a pair that I can actually wear!

I think I paid $665 total. So it's not really a ton of money, but it is significantly less than you would find for a Ravello boot anywhere else now, especially after you factor in tax and shipping.

There shouldn't be any tax if you're ordering from a specialty store out of state... which is what most probably do

$665 isn't bad though... color #8 is around $615 and ravello avg is probably $715

Interesting. I'll probably send a note to Leffot to get their opinion as well. The way I walk will chew through a single leather sole in no time (at least the tip of the toe portions) if not topy'd

    Hello everyone.

Very happy with my new purchase - Alden Color 8 PTB

Here's a pic with the PTBs side by side with my LongWings.
