Like the look. I personally can't do scotch grain, but looks like a great pickup.

Can't do scotch grain because you don't like how it looks or some functional reason?

Thanks! They're my first shell purchase, and I'm really happy with them so far. The color is very beautiful in real life, I don't think the photo does them justice.

Why I like Calfskin Leather: I'm nigh unto sixty years old, so these observations come over many years. Recently I purchased my first two pair of Alden suede shoes - they are now on E-Bay. I just don't care for suede. The same for cordovan leather. The reason? I love working Obenauf or Pitch Blend into my calfskin, I love the feel and smell. It is a ritual. I love how these products not only protect the leather but the deep patina that develops over time is wonderful. I'm sorry, but the character of calfskin over time rivals cordovan - IMHO. Recently I purchased a pair of brown CXL Indy boot from Jason (our Jason) - I have worn and oiled them a number of times and the leather is turning a beautiful almost iridescent brown - one of the few boots that I have had regular compliments on. Calfskin lovers arise!

You don't think shell patinas over time?:

The difference is it also lasts a lot longer and will not crack after years as easily so you can enjoy it for more years.

I agree with you on Suede though. I don't care much for it.

Of course cordovan patinas over time, I just think that calfskin is just as nice. And I have had calfskin shoes that were 20+ years old and never had a crack - and to me calfskin creases better - softer. And I have worn them in every kind of weather and they always come back.

Calfskin also takes a lot more work to shine and keep shined/maintained.

brown CXL is a great, great leather for boot I agree - but I think that is really a different story than standard calfskin.

A bit of the look (reminds me of my grandpa - which I still consider stodgy as opposed to vintagely fashionable) :), but also the texture. I'm just weird like that. Often can't do suede for the same reasons.

This it true, but I only use leather protector on my shoes, and with a good hard buffing with a horsehair brush I get a real nice satin shine...

Well no, I get this with all my calfskins, but CXL is certainly special... I have a pair of Alden burgundy calfskin blucher shoes - special made for Shot Mart. They are beautiful. I'm also getting a calfskin pair of Alden Chukkas from Shoe Mart tomorrow.
