i have no interest at all in having a "minimalist" wardrobe; it turns clothing from what i enjoy (a hobby, a collection, an art, an expression) into considering in which situations you need which "tools" (situation-appropriate clothing) and really, who gives a ****?

Thinking about it I would be down to do that for a little while. Upgrade the white Ts to American or Alternatve Apparel, swap out the denim for a really good worthwhile pair of denim ($300 denim level) and swap those sneakers out for like a pair of CPs or something.

I don't own all of these yet, but here's what I'm after, at the least. Minimalist, or not?

Hats (a personal hobby of mine):

-3 fedoras, one light grey, one dark brown, and one tan
-1 Panama fedora
-1 flat cap/ivy cap, or newsboy, perhaps a brown or grey tweed
-1 western or outback style hat

Suits/Coats/Jackets:

-1 medium or charcoal grey suit for dressy functions
-2 sport coats, one grey and brown
-1 brown G-1 type leather bomber jacket for casual wear
-1 light tan/khaki trench coat for smart casual, to dressier wear
-1 cotton windbreaker
-1 wool grey waistcoat

Pants:

-1 pair of wool slacks
-3 pairs of chino pants
-1 pair of nicer jeans
-1 pair of work jeans
-1 pair of khaki shorts
-1 pair of swim shorts

Shoes/Boots:

-1 pair of black oxford shoes
-1 pair of brown oxford shoes
-1 pair of brown casual leather shoes
-1 pair of suede hiking boots
-1 pair of white tennis shoes

Shirts:

-1 light blue oxford shirt
-1 white dress shirt
-1 blue-on-white checker patterned dress shirt
-1 dark blue dress shirt
-1 white dress shirt with pinstripes
-1 dark blue denim work shirt
-1 pale blue, rather slim-fitting work shirt with "railroad" stripes
-6 serviceable plain white t-shirts, mainly to serve the function of undershirts

Clearly, you need 2 stacks of tops, 3" high each (I rearranged stuff yesterday), in addition to a closet full of jackets, and closing in on three dozen belts. Also, about a dozen pairs of sneakers and a few pairs of proper shoes and boots.

I do see the utility of a minimal closet, but it's not something I aspire to. I think that if you need to go on a trip though, it's a very useful exercise.
