Hi all, I'm the photographer that went to Paris with @la guy and @Synthese. Hopefully you saw a few of my photos on Styleforum's instagram account (they are the good ones, not the ones of food and stuff :p). I expect you'll be seeing more soon -- showroom shots from De Bonne Facture, Stephan Schneider, and SNS Herning, and a bunch of stuff from the trade show floors.

Anyway, I figured I'd start a thread showcasing a bit of the street style we saw in Paris as we walked hither and thither in search of decent coffee, expensive crappy beer, tasty falafel, perfect macaroons, and of course clothing.

The thing about Paris is you could stand on a corner all day and take pictures of people -- everyone seems to be dressed well and many have a real flair. They also move fast and don't like having their picture taken most of the time, which makes things a bit difficult. I tried to focus more on what seemed to be everyday people, though with it being fashion time, there was some spillover into "fashion" people. Here you see impeccable street wear, menswear, and everything in between.

Without further ado, here's a first couple to whet your appetite. I'll post more in the coming days. I'm also in Paris for a few more days, so hopefully I'll have the chance to shoot a bit more.

Feel free to discuss what you like and don't like, what you find interesting, etc.

Would like to see more of these. The ones I like best seem to be taken from a lower angle.

I will definitely keep adding more. I always prefer to shoot from a lower angle as it makes people, especially men, look better. However it's not easy to do in the middle of the street when you are trying to catch someone moving by, especially since I'm 6'5". The best photos are generally the ones where I've been able to stop people and ask them if I could take their picture. As you might imagine, I'm better able to compose and adjust. Street photographer definitely isn't where I excel as a photographer, I would say.

You should post a link in random fashion thoughts; great photos and I'm afraid most people won't find the thread.

If this is something you want to invest time and money in, you'd need to get a kit that works well for portraiture.

The vest over the leather was what made me ask Eric to take this picture in the first place.

Is this for me? First, I don't agree that street photography needs a kit for portraiture. A small, inconspicuous camera like the Fuji X100 I was using is much better than a big canon full frame body and 24-70 2.8 or 85 1.2. Second, I do have a kit that works well for portraiture -- check out my photographs of De Bonne Facture, Stephan Schneider, and SNS Herning here http://www.styleforum.net/t/517045/...in-paris-image-dump-thread-of-ill-repute/0_50.

I really don't like the prevailing wisdom that good photography requires expensive gear. Gear is the means to an end, and you need to know what end you have in sight and then have gear appropriate for that vision. Could I have gotten the shots in the showrooms I did without wheeling through Paris $10k worth of gear including two studio strobes and a good body and lens? Maybe not. Would I have preferred to have even more lights and mods with me? Almost certainly. But I maybe could have gotten close with a couple inexpensive flashes and a lesser camera and lens that would have cost $1k-$2k. Photography is a combination of vision and technique to execute that vision. Street photography is more about getting close to people and having the timing and skill to capture a real moment with strong composition. You could do great street photography with a point and shoot. I like my X100 because it offers more control and a great viewfinder with a good sensor in a small package. Be a good photographer first, then get the gear that matches what you want.

Anyway, rant off. I'm not impressed with many of my street pics because street photography isn't something that really inspires me. It is fun to do and show you guys real people in Paris, but I'm probably not going to be spending the time to get really good at this particular style of photography. Lifestyle, portraits, and fashion are the things that interest me most and that's where I spend my time trying to hone my craft.

Noone's talking about a 10grand kit. Also I've seen the other thread. No need to get defensive.
