Strange denim failure (N&F/Tobi.com blanket lined jeans) + terrible customer service heads up

I bought some of these jeans a couple of months ago, and have worn them about 15 times, no wash or soak. I noticed the other day that a patch on the back of the right calf had a bunch of threads hanging out of it, in an area about 3x2 inches in size. On close inspection it's actually loops of fabric coming out of the weave, as if it's not holding together properly. In a couple of places the thread hasn't broken, so it comes out, turns around and goes back in, sometimes with a length of about 3/4 of an inch hanging out.

Has anyone seen anything like this happen before? Looking in more obvious wear areas there seems to be some loosening of the threads, but nothing where it's actually unravelling itself spontaneously. It's definitely not liner threads poking through, as it's a different colour, and I can see where they come out of the weave and go back in. I'll try and post pictures in a few days when I have my good camera with me.

As an aside I contacted Tobi.com about it, and they initially told me it was pilling(!), followed by offering me $10 store credit after I told them what I thought about their theory, followed by offering me 10% money back, with no further restitution being considered. The jeans are currently on clearance, but I bought them on sale before they became non refundable. It's after 30 days from purchase so they're claiming they have no responsibility for selling defective goods. Just a heads up in case anyone is under the impression that they care about that sort of thing.
