Which one? I'm looking for a new alterations tailor... the one I've been using is OK fit-wise, but sloppy in terms of needlework (seams keep coming loose!) and not very accommodating to anything that doesn't fit his notion of what a suit should look like.

Do you recall how much it was for each item? I have a jacket I need resized from 42R to 40R but I dont have any idea how much it would cost.

Good luck. I had this done once, but the outcome wasn't good. I'd never attempt this again.

A four size reduction? It isn't just the shoulders, but also the chest, which can't be cut down. I predict you will be unhappy with the results.

....so a four size reduction will work, just the button stance and pocket positioning will be less than perfect.
I used a good tailor, but the finished product was just too imperfect for my taste.

im not a tailor, but the only immovable items on a jacket are the buttons and pockets. the rest can be cut/trimmed. so a four size reduction will work, just the button stance and pocket positioning will be less than perfect.

If the buttons and the pockets can't be moved, that leaves only two seams out of 4 which can be adjusted. 50% of the grading between sizes occurs at center front, which can't be adjusted because of the buttonholes so any adjustments have to done at the back. So a garment can be slimmed down but it will never be balanced, and a 42 cut down to a 40 will never fit the same way a proper size 40 would; you will end up with a big front and a small back, which restricts forward movement of the arm. Few alterations tailors will tell you it can't be done because it is a big job and thus $$$ for them.

How feasible is it to resize an overcoat from a 42 to 38?
