I've been getting a lot of PMs and emails in the general vein of "I really wanted X, but it's not available/on sale, and I can get Y, which is like X, but in the wrong color/model/etc.., should I just go for it?"

No, don't. If you really, really, want it, and could afford it, buy it at retail. If it goes on sale 5 months later, you will have gotten 5 months of wear out of it. Don't think that you got "ripped off." If you can't afford it at retail, and it sells out on sale, it was not meant to be yours, at least not for now. Don't settle for something you don't really want.

plus, 2 items you got on sale and only sort of like = 1 item that you really liked and wanted but didn't want to spend the money.

when you add it up, it's all the same.

Best advice I ever got. I began this game looking for "deals" and such, and had a bunch of stuff I kind of liked. This year though, instead of buying a bunch of junk that I'd end up never wearing, I instead started looking at webstores and collections and wondering "Do I like this?" If I liked it enough, I'd buy (See black calf 5 zip from January, ID bracelet, side-zips, LVC denim, MMM tees). If I kind of liked it, I'd put it in a wishlist or somewhere. If it made it to sale, great, I'd buy. If not, ah well. Not the end of the world.

Ended up much happier in the end with clothes I actually like to wear instead of alternatives. I didn't like my black calf Toj moto because I was using it as a substitute for a 5 zip, the jacket I really wanted. So I barely wore the moto and ended up selling it. When I found a black 5 zip on Tres Bien for $1600, yes it was a lot of $$$$ but it is a jacket I've already worn more times than I ever wore my toj. Clothes are clothes, buy and wear what you want.

Agreed – I buy most of my stuff at retail now, buying much less but significantly happier with what I buy. Not to say there aren't gems on YJ or on sale.

Margiela is doing that long layer underneath blazer/jacket thing. I've always liked the look but seems repetitive.

Why is margiela even relevant? He left awhile ago. I don't even know who designs. Helmut slowly faded after he left.

Many designers have teams of people coming up with most of the non runway stuff you see in stores. I don't even think Margiela was designing much as far back as 2002 so it's silly to suddenly lose interest. Even though the design team are just following trends, I thought Margiela SS14 was great, far better than anything i've seen in the last couple of years.

But really you don't even know if its the same design team. It's good but not great. Nothing like what margiela used to come up with

Lazy response. I think conflating the value of Margiela as a fashion brand with the intentions of its original designer is unfair. As long as the product is still good then that's what's important. Of course, that's totally subjective, but it's certainly not in the realm of ridiculous about-face like SLP.

I wasn't arguing that the current brand isn't following the intentions of the original designer whatever that means but that current product isn't as creative as it used to be under the original designer ie that the products aren't good.

When you present yourself to others and talk about yourself, interests, profession and hobbies: Do you say fashion or interests in clothes is one of your hobbies?

I tend to say "clothing", not "fashion", but I don't think it matters which one.
