pie is still a special dessert. ice cream on the other hand, with so much cheap grocery ice cream around plus those nasty chemically mutated soft serves all over, has lost its luster.

I recall how the oldies who grew up here after the second world war found ice cream so special (and expensive) that if they do get to eat them, they'd pour milk or water on the bowl and drink it to make sure every bit of ice cream isn't wasted.

This is a very subversive thread. Sure, cake and pie are sworn enemies and there will always be tension between them, but SugarButch is deliberately trying to drive a wedge between ice cream and pie. What is to be gained by setting up these two natural allies as antagonists? Ice cream and pie should be working together and placing one against the other only serves the appetites of a fussy solitary pie nibbling elite.

Here are some old pix from our little town's Labor Day P.E.C. I doubt you'd get the same turnout for for a cake eating contest....

First, cake is not relevant to this thread.

Second, thank you for reminding us that pie eaters are gluttonous cretins, frequently wheeled out for the amusement of the civilized.

Everybody in those pics looks reasonably fit and healthy.

Contrast that with the average ice cream eater -

You know who else eats ice cream? Dumb bints with menstrual cramps who have to lie in bed all day watching Sex and the City.

A cautionary note on "pie" eating. Michael Douglas claims this practice gave him throat cancer, so you might want to confine your "pie" eating activities to just one kind you find particularly delicious and safe.

Tough decision. I haven't had pie or ice cream in nearly 10 years but if I had to choose, maybe pie. I'd like to vote cake (non-conventional).
Here are some good pies I've seen... I was actually planning on making one this season.

SB do they have Ralph's in San Fran? If so do us both a favor and go try some Graeter's! Check the top of the lid to make sure it's firm and completely solid (if not it's evidence of heat shock) ... to make sure it's a good pint and not affected by the shipping. Report back when you have returned to earth!
