Personalizing your dress shirt with your initials? If so, where? If not, bad taste?

If the monogram isn´t your own initials, yes, you´re open to being questioned!

To each his own, but that's exactly why a number of people here do not like visible monograms.

IMO, the best spot. Or maybe just a bit higher if the shirt lacks pockets

My Hong Kong tailor insisted on a monogram, and was mighty disappointed when I asked him to put it on the left front, below the belt line (about where the extra button is on most shirts). I think that's a good place.

I've had hand-me-downs earlier where the monogram was on the pocket, and it did become a bit annoying to do the double explaining (yes, it's a monogram; no, it's not mine)

+7 inside the yoke. Tougher to lose if you send it to the cleaners. I wouldn't pay more than a few bucks for it though...

I saw a photo of Fred Astaire once with a monogram at his left elbow. I liked it so much I asked Ricky for one on my next Jantzen order. I like the idea of it for a couple of shirts that you occassionally pull out of the closet, but not on a daily basis.

I get them on the left waist. My favorite spot.

I'm an inside the yoke guy too. But only when it's free of charge. I've been using the old english font, but I'm off that now. Will have to decide on something different on my next shirt.

I found an old shirt that was made for me with my initials on the lower left, just above the belt line. I think I didnt like that the initials werent obviously handmade. I used to get these small, obviously handmade ones but even that was an expensive waste of time. And what if the monogram gets botched?

About the only place I would get one is inside the shirt where no one could see it. Then again, I launder my own shirts so there isn't much danger of losing them.

I go with visible monograms on some shirts. Lately I've been getting WW Chan to do my shirts with a monogram about 2" above waist height above the left hip. I get it in either the same color thread as the shirt, or a very slightly contrasting color (light gray on white shirts, or one shade darker than the ground on blue shirts).

If you are going to get a monogram for laundry identification purposes, put it someplace it can be seen when the shirt is finished on a hanger. It doesn't need to be visible when the shirt is worn, but it should be someplace that a minimum wage counter clerk can see without removing the shirt from the hanger. I've had a couple of Ascot Chang shirts make it home from the cleaners despite being mistagged, because the person at the cleaners saw the monogram. If the monogram is inside the yoke, the odds of such a reunion go down dramatically.

Left lower body with same color stitching as the shirt.

I might try a more visible monogram one of these days.

Cast another vote in the "inside the yoke" category.

I get my initials placed on all my Jantzen shirts (self color) placed about where the top of the chest pocket would be if I had pockets. I find that it is a discreet, interesting addition to the shirt. [Frankly, I find pockets on dress shirts much more disturbing than monograms.] When I wear suspenders (the majority of the time), the monogram is somewhat hidden from view.

Excellent idea - absolutely no reason why not save in a few minds which can be disregarded.

I prefer on the left hand pocket. Ascot Chiang has a good range of styles.
