It doesn't make the user any more skilled or powerful, but the owners are almost always great knights and lords so they're usually the best swordsmen anyway. The Valyrians used magic to make it, but that's a bit of a different thing. Lord Marmot (leader of the Night's Watch) giving Jon his Valyrian sword was a huge deal for that reason; it was his family sword and he's handing it to a bastard and new member. Reinforces that "there's something special in store for you, boy" message.
Incorrect! Nerd alert. Valyrian Steel is one of the few materials that can be used to kill a White Walker, right?

I liked that storyline a lot in the show, much less so in the book. The dragon reveal at the end pretty much turned her into a badass though, made the whole thing worthwhile.

I didn't like Catelyn's storyline much, she's just so damned obnoxious. She plays the Game of Thrones, but badly, and her actions really **** Ned over from the blindside. The Imp makes the storyline worthwhile though.

They really didn't focus on Bran much in the show, which made his storyline feel like a throwaway. I bet a lot of people don't know why they should care. Even moreso the stuff with Asha (or whatever the spelling), the "why do I care" is never established.

Jorah is sort of the anti-Ned; he made a practical decision to keep his family happy that happened to violate honor. He's a cool character, lots of depth. They kind of hinted at rather than made explicit some of the complexity of his relationship with Dany, and I'm not quite sure how they're going to rectify that.

Yeah I'm surprised nobody in the show brings it up, but Catelyn abducting Tyrion is a terrible move and she handles the situation in the worst possible way. She basically starts the war (it might have been inevitable anyway) and doesn't even bother to let Ned know what she's doing. Not to mention that, as Tyrion points out, it makes no sense for him to be the culprit because he's clearly smart enough not to loan out his own weapon to an assassin. And Baelish is so slimy (especially as portrayed on the show) that I can't imagine why anyone would take his word for anything.

+1000 exactly why I hated Catelyn. You'd think those two were completely new to ruling a fantasyland. Hell Robb has 20x more sense than either of them and he's 15.

VAGUE AND NON-PLOT SPOILING BOOK REFERENCE DON'T READ NITPICK CREW

You know I'm not so sure if it does or not. That's pretty specific, and other "non-magical" things will kill them too (obsidian). I can see why it would, dragonfire and such.

The "why do these clowns trust Littlefinger" bit is interesting. Ned does because A) Catelyn told him to (another reason why she's dumb) and B) he had no other adept players available to him.

Catelyn apparently trusts him because he loved her as a boy and she thinks he's still like that, or something? And has no ulterior motives like...killing her husband, the brother of the man who humiliated him. Hard to figure there.

It is. It's more interesting in the book. Part of what's wrong is that Jon is supposed to be 14, where as in the show he looks at least 21. Robb is supposed to be 15 as well. A lot of their character traits make more sense if they are teenagers instead of young adults.

Yes. Ned was 35 also. Which would have made him 18 when he helped Robert overthrow the Targs

Actually, I'd argue that Jamie and Cersei started the war by trying to kill Bran which sets Catelyn and Ed on their quest for the truth, which leads both of them to the source and calamity. Killing the first hand didn't help things either.

Re the wall: I actually like it as I feel some bad ass **** with wildlings and white walkers are coming up, and I like getting toknow the characters before hand.

Yeah but all the Starks had were accusations. Going after Tyrion w/o solid evidence was stupid. Seemed to me Cat just grabbed him because she was caught off guard when Tyrion noticed her in the inn. And I don't think it was the Lannisters who sent the assassin anyway, very well could have been Littlefinger. Have to wait and see

Having not read the books and went into the show blindly. I watched the episode where Baelish betrayed Ned and thought wow that slimy bastard, then I rewatched it a few days later (before neds head episode) and thought, maybe he was trying to save Ned from getting slaughtered (even though he told him not to trust him).. I may be a poor judge of sneaky bastards.... anyone got a bridge to sell? or perhaps ocean front property?

He gave Eddard some solid advice. Eddard chose differently and Baelish went with the other horse he was betting on or so it seemed to me.

Btw, wasn't Littlefinger in The Wire? The guy that became Mayor.
