I think the answer is in your question. He basically said he will retire before playing for anyone else. I guess teams could have been a prick and put a gun to his head and make him choose between giving up the $7mln the Lakers owe him or playing in Milwaukee or something but it looks like they respected his wishes because there are a lot of teams that could use him and most of those teams have more money than the Knicks. I think a bunch of collusion goes on in the league anyway so maybe the Knicks will be forced to "pay" for him somehow down the road.

Man this is business, if I were in the East, I'd fuck up that deal if it means making the Knicks a better contender. I mean the Knicks are supposedly only going to sign him for $1.6mil.

Who knows what really goes on. I mean, look at the AK47 deal, that deal makes this one look overpriced. There are enough teams that can use MWP and that have more than $2mln a year to throw at him (which he is obviously worth) so you would think that he would have gotten a bid but here we are......

K47 deal is just shady, there really is nothing they can do if he wants to sign with the Nets for a lot less money.

I'm just curious if Artest bidding was already over before he agreed with the Knicks or if it got bypassed for some reason.

This has become an Artest love fest suddenly. That the guy is a major dickhead so if he was picked up by a team he didn't want to play for he's shit that locker room up.

I think that explains it better than anything else. Sure, lots of teams have 2m to spend on him but they were all smart enough to stay away.

I was hesitant with MWP coming to the Lakers but after seeing how he has been int he first year, I really wouldn't mind him in the team at all even to finish his cotnract there. He has been decent to good player and great at times. Still questionable 3 point shots at times but dude is instant energy and an asset. Still a headcase but Kobe managed to maintain him on the sane side of things. He was a big factor to that championship year. He hasn't had much breakdown while in LA, can't even remember a major one off the top of my head right now.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I meant the IND - DET brawl, not LA.

While that brawl was a new low (and no one mentions fans throwing shit at him), he is a guy that has never gotten a coach fired, you never hear teammates talk bad about him and his coaches all say that he is a good guy. Compared to Dwightmare, who tries to sell a clean, lovable image but got his coach and GM fired, yells at teammates and actually wanted the Lakers to get rid of one of the top 5 players to ever and still play the game just because of his ego. MWP is a guy I would not want to play against but would love on my team. Hard nosed, energetic, defense minded.

I don't condone the fight with fans but when you are the game, people think they have immunity and can say whatever curse they want to the players, talk about their wives etc. Imagine Noah going to the place of business of that blonde (alleged husband killer ) broad and sticking two middle fingers right in her face and calling her a whore. How long before police arrive to arrest him?

i've heard from a friend who is close to the lakers that the big frustration with howard was that he has the skill sets to be a great p&r big man, but that he refuses to think of himself that way and insists that he's going to be the next kareem/hakeem. which, of course, explains his sky-high TO count.

I think everyone is over that whole fiasco. O'neal and Jackson were all involved too and are all in the clear now, granted Artest wasn't the biggest part of that brawl but it wasn't 100% his fault and again, people are over it. Dude did not choke his coach like Sprewell did, or Kobe and Denver. Someone threw a cup at him and Artest overreacted, it wasn't some crap he did for some shits and giggles.

with all the drama on the lakes this year, mwp's season kind of got overshadowed, but he had a really good year. he's still a terrific on-ball defender, though not quite as quick as he used to be (amazing hands, though). his shot was pretty solid most of the year and he actually was moving well, after several years when he ran like a bear on roller skates.

continuing my mwp love-fest (i really will miss the guy): the brawl was almost 10 years ago. and you've got to give mwp props -- he eventually realized he had a problem and got help for it. he's seriously wacky ... don't know if he's actually crazy or just wired different ... but he's a guy who TRIES to do the right thing, even if he short-circuits once in a while.

He really does try to be a good man, dude auctioned off his championship ring for charity for gods sake.

Plus the Lakers likely wouldn't win that one chip w/o him.

    Yawn

Edit: I suppose I should give a substantive response even though NorCal is being a dumbass.

MWP is not a guy I'd ever bring in as a GM or coach.

I wouldn't want guys with a history. I wouldn't want JR Smith, Sprewell, D Howard, Kenyon Martin, S Jackson, Rodman, even Rasheed who I actually like. I've had opportunities to personally hire guys that have shown me a glimpse of risk and I pass. I'm risk averse in general. I believe that with this kind of $ at stake you're supposed to keep it clean. Like K Garnett, he gets shit here, but has the guy ever caused a public problem? No. He's a model pro, and the kind of guy I'm willing to pay.

Some may be great players or even all stars, but I wouldn't want to invest salary and that much risk in a ticking time bomb. Let someone else take the risk, I'll keep paying guys like Duncan.

Lastly, since homophobe NorCal triggered the thought, anyone else notice that Jason Collins has not gotten a deal?
