I like to wear brown shoes with my navy blue pants, the black on navy isn't really my thing. The question is: Should the socks be brown to match the shoes or navy to match the pants? I won't tell you what kind of loafers they are for fear of this getting severely off-topic. [IMG]

I'd go with navy, just because I think it would look better. There's an old saw about matching the socks to the trouser to extend the leg line, but I don't put much stock in it. It's not like anyone can see your socks when you're standing, unless you're pulling a Thom Browne.

Alternatively, you could wear contrasting socks to coordinate with a color you're wearing up top.

Thanks for the info. I'll try them with Navy socks next time. As of right now I've just been wearing them with browns.

In this case I'd say the navy to match your pants... because as you're walking or if you're sitting with a crossed leg, your pant leg will come up a bit to reveal your sock and if it's the same color as your shoe then visually it just adds "weight"/attention to the bottom of you or your shoe area... I'd say to blend it in with the pants.

Neither. Maroon as lakewolf says or some other color picking up the shirt or tie. I almost never match my socks to either my suit or shoes.

I would go with yellow or gold colored socks, to go with the LV logo on your loafer. [IMG]

But seriously though, I would match your socks to pants. Alternatively, you may consider not matching the socks to anything, other than to pick up some color in your whole ensemble.

I would never match my socks to the shirt, maybe it is stylish to some but I find it tacky.

I would go with navy, especially if it is a shorter vamp loafer.

You must just wear sold shirts- I didn't say match-Safe, but Booooooooooooooring.

    Are those newer?
I didn't know LV was ripping off Jil Sander's toe.

No idea. I was in a Louis Vuitton store for the first time 4 months ago. Prada makes a similar toe. I like the roundedness of it. Not a fan of really pointy or square toes.

I misunderstood your post then, apologies. [IMG]

BTW, I own one solid shirt and it is white. I don't think I own any white socks though.

Generally I deliberately try to avoid matching socks to either shoes or pants; instead, I'm most particular that the socks work with the whole outfit, and that's where I find the practice of matching socks to shoes or pants to fail on most people. For it's a simplistic guide that misleads people to think they've made the right choice when frankly I'd say they give the impression of being color blind.

Oftentimes I choose a color that's in the same color family as long as the socks are a strikingly different shade and enhance the beauty of the shoe or pants. This summer I've enjoyed wearing extremely pale grey suede Marc Jacobs shoes, which I think are appropriate for the season, and they look lovely with a very rich medium grey sock. So I picked up a whole stack of the socks.

There are also some pairings that are utterly classic, such as the summer straw-colored suit, which I learned in university is traditionally worn with navy blue socks and brown shoes. I've always been happy with that combination.

For summer, I have numerous pairs of spectator shoes, and they open up a palette of both solids and patterns in a wide range of colors.
