Bokassa sure knew how to dress like a monarch. No way would anyone mistake him for a mere president.

Semi-related: I once read a book called "Inside Europe" written in the 1930s by a socialist. He didn't like Hitler much but clearly had some sympathy for him, disliked Mussolini more and absolutely despised Franco. And, predictably, thought Stalin was a great guy who just wasn't Western enough to realize he'd be better off not holding show trials.

It's fun to read stuff about these guys written while they were in power.

IIRC, Franco was worried about winding up like France. Maybe he didn't make the best choices of "friends" in retrospect.

I'm digging Castro the most....he definitely makes that SW&D workwear look work for him.

Quoted for ironic juxtaposition.

I never once found a picture of Lord Halifax with his jacket buttoned up. He did like it, tehDrape.

That pic is 1939. Joe Kennedy sure liked a wide leg trouser.

Except his jacket sleeves don't look like they were cut for Guhvenor Ahhhnold and mistakenly attached to the body while Mariano spent quality time with his vodka.

Let's try this again:

I don't understand the fora's obsession with LIFE magazine pictures of Mid-century Despots.

Because they are dressed a lot better than any modern public figure?

And the fora is obssessed with dressing well?

I myself tune in for the reminder that there was a time that one could rule the world and unabashedly look quite pleased with one's self.
