Thanks. Just got them yesterday via Tom Park in Hawaii. Weather permitting, I will be breaking them in this weekend.

I believe I first saw the style at Paul Stuart when they carried EG in the 80s.

My New Year's resolution is to break in at least one pair of new shoes per week.

i like these as much as the preppy ones i posted above.

Neither are preppy. Actual preppy loafers in real life (those weak of stomach, avert your eyes):

Horsebit Guccis, either polished and pristine or destroyed:

Made in Maine Weejuns, handsewn moccasin fronts unlike those Anglo loafers that you posted, same dilio:

Please, in either case: no socks.

The US-made Weejuns are history, but Paul Stuart carries a true moccasin front penny in shell, reputedly made in Maine:

The Alden and Alden for BB shell LHS's are nice, but are false moccasins done in the English style, like the Lobb Lopez. A penny done with a false moccasin front is a tad more urbane, more redcoat, more Wildsmith, less apple pie.

I think that the Norwegian originals are still made...but I have never seen a human being wearing one.

Q: How did the American style of no socks with loafers evolve?

I thought it was a great analogy.

The American contribution to both the glory and decline of male dress during the past century has been in leading the casualization of clothes. Examples:

- The lounge/sack suit replacing more formal forms of daywear.

- Black tie replacing white tie.

- SB suits without vests.

And so on.

As for going sockless, I do not know, but when I don't know, I find it useful to blame Southerners.

Very stylish and somewhat unique whilst still maintaining a lot of classic elements.

Would you say that the apex of American style was just a point along a parabolic curve inevitably headed downward?

I like them best brogued, in suede.

they do look like a chopped chelsea boot. Hardly hideous but theyre better for mod kind of clothing like a mohair suit or jacket; even a velvet jacket.
