I have been poor as a child, 3 or 4 times we were basically at the mercy of a landlord that could have evicted us, and most of my growing up we were at the stage where we had an old car, the kids wore used clothes, and we has to be very careful of what we ate.

when I got out of the army I had something like 200 bucks, no clothes, no place to live, no car.

4 years ago the company I worked for went bankrupt, I had spent my life savings on moving my family to the states, and the company that I had worked for, before going bankrupt, hadn't paid me everyting it owed me, so I was pretty broke with no savings and no job, a pregnant wife and a 5 year old son. that was about the toughest period of my life.

More proof that poor people stay poor because of bad decisions.

I'm not poor. But in this situation because of poor decisions. Not the laptop though, that + my degree is my way to a better life. But I think buying C&Js with last of savings, not my best move.

No, unless you stole the computer and are posting this from a shelter/cardboard box and your last meal came from a garbage can.

By that token, when Rube was homeless and penniless he wasn't really poor, because he had not been previously.

i am a lot poorer than I have been for the last few years. discretionary income has been pretty nonexistent as of late because of a big mortgage, car payments, cc bills, student loans and down income as of late (which seems to be once again changing for the better).

The poorest I ever was when my first son was born. we were 24, newly married, I was making 20k a year and my rent was 700 a month. was driving a 20 year old car, was rolling quarters for groceries and receiving grocery store gift cards as presents from family. eating tuna, spaghetti and chuck steaks when we could. no nights out, no movies, no anything really.

I got married in '92, still in college, working in the mailroom. Making 12.5K/year. Again, if you eat food every day, even if it is ramen, and have a permanent roof over your head, you are not shit poor!

Take a look at pics of Haiti, even before the earthquake, that is shit poor. the great thing about the US is that you can be poor, and assuming you don't have any psychological/drug addiction issues, you have the opportunity to work you way to a better life. A lot of the truly poor countries, you are born poor, you staying poor until you die.

When I was growing up and my father died, we were poor. We still had a house, his small pension, but it was to the point I'd mow lawns and work on local farms to buy school clothes. For the first couple of years after my father died, it was the local church that gave us a turkey and some presents for Xmas and turkey for thanksgiving.

When I moved out, I went through some even poorer times. Like, making soup from ketchup packages taken from restaurants. I didn't like that, so learned to really bust my ass.

    .

I hear you. one passover, when I was 15 or so, a delivery truck from a grocery store pulls up and delivers a load of food. some anonamous doner had bought us groceries for the holiday.

never made soup from ketchup, but for most of high school I worked 4 shifts a week in a fast food resteraunt, and would get 2 hamburgers a shift. so all of my protien was basically these 8 little burgers a week, for years.

I will make $380 a week after taxes for the next six weeks for a total of $2280

I am paying $2400 in car payments that I don't have to make, but that I am making anyways to get them to stop harassing me and to be done with them. They have been calling 16 times a day for the last week, bothering my father, and leaving threatening messages on my voicemail. I have 4 months to pay them off - but their computer erroneously reports that I am 3 months "late" on my payment. They are too inept to correct their mistake, or even LOOK at my account before calling me and demanding I pay them or be hit with a debt charge-off and lose my title for a year. They had already "filed paperwork" for this process.

I am paying $180 in insurance in this six week period.

I am paying $80 for vehicle tabs in this period.

I am paying $100 for my phone, which I need for work, but which is not covered by my work.

Plus I have to pay for gas, and food.

So yeah, I'm about negative $480 in income for over the course of a month. I had a couple hundred bucks in Christmas money, and I took out a $500 payday loan, which will cost me $575 two weeks after I'm done paying the rest of this shit off. I already sold everything I own that's worth any appreciable money.

I'm not feeling sorry for myself or anything, but claiming that because I have a computer means that I'm not poor at the moment is kind of asinine.

You are, though I like you, patently unqualified to make the judgment you did with no other information.

It means exactly what I said. You make the assumption that because I, at one point, could afford a computer, this means that I can never again be "shit poor".

    I am poor.

I actually was poor the first few years of my life. Dad had a small-timer job in financial industry, Mom was taking care of me. Didn't get good until we moved to Long Island.

I appreciate it. I can't wait to be done with these fucks at Chrysler Financial. Seriously, I have talked to about five different people regarding my account - All of them have told me something different. My "account manager" didn't even bother to look at my payment history before angrily telling me how irresponsible I am that I'm so "late" on making my payments. I made her go over my payment history every month for 66 months to tell me exactly where I'm "late" in paying it off. I'm not. (And she got pissed off because she was wrong!) I have four extensions, each one gives me an extra term month to pay off the principal payment after my last payment (which was in December)... and yet - I'm being basically forced into paying them all by the second week of Feb, causing me extreme financial hardship. They don't give a shit. They just want their money, or they are going to screw up my credit and play games with my title for an indeterminate period of time. After I've just spent the last five and a half years paying $35k for a $16k car. Buncha assholes. If I could afford a lawyer, I might be tempted to sue the shit out of them for something. But of course, I can't.
