Nope. One of the biggest features Apple added to iOS5 was "PC Free." This means you never have to connect it to a computer if you don't want to. Your full set up can be done on the phone itself.

i have no idea. I have a super basic plan with only a few minutes and a few texts. There's enough rollover minutes (thousands and thousands) where I don't worry about phone calls, but texting I'm not sure. That is why my bill is $32 a month.

If you want to sync your music and movies, then yes. I was speaking to the initial phone set up, which used to require iTunes even if you didn't plan on syncing any media.

They do offer iTunes Match which gives you access to all your music in the cloud, but I have no desire to pay for that.

it used to be a little spotty, and on some days it can still be, but I use it all the time now.

I think you mentioned having a burg from Monegard-Mugneret a while ago that was awesome. They have an '04 premier cru for like $55 that would be awesome.

I am sure, great producer. I haven't had a burgundy with that much age on it actually.

I'm so glad I still have some grandfathered old texting plan.

The price on unlimited messaging is absurd. $20? wtf?

I get a few hundred texts for $5 a month (and I have google voice so a lot of my messages are just plain data).

That was the case with CDMA 3G on Verizon. Not sure what their coverage is like with LTE, but I would wager all three carriers went out of their way to get NYC right in that regard.

Manton basically calls me every day at work (often multiple times a day), and we discuss aged Burgundy and scope out which bottles to try. Do it!!

I no longer sync with my pc, and couldn't be happier. All my devices are synced from the cloud. Syncing with the pc was a pain for me.

Yup. It's obscene. More so when you consider the fact that text messages are just data, but they don't include them in those plans.

I read an article a couple years back about how texting is almost pure profit for carriers. The reason its character limited to 160 is because that's the maximum size it could be to piggy back them on the signals they were already sending. So there really is no cost to the phone company here.

    That's just it--they aren't even data.

They are little bits of content that piggyback on top of the control signals and so have absolutely no marginal cost. Obviously there is infrastructure cost in hardware that knows to strip the messages out of the control codes (although you probably can't buy enterprise phone hardware that doesn't do this) but it isn't using up any extra bandwidth.

charging $20 per month per person (or $.30 or whatever per message) for something with zero marginal cost is pretty crazy.

I was referring to this comment, I think you were referring to the comment about setting up the iphone.
