When I wear a single vent suit jacket from the vent downwards the jacket hangs away from the body. Should it hang like this or continue straight down?

I have the same problem on some jackets and I think it's a sign they don't fit properly around my butt (or that my ass is too big depending on how you want to look at it). Double-vented works a little better in general for me.

Stay with double vented - single is far from elegant and brings such problems as this.

If the back hangs away at the bottom it is a short back.

If the vent splays open, it is a long back.

Both are related to balance issues

    Please explain 'balance issues'.

Have a good tailor sew it closed. About 15$ will solve the problem. Then, try to stay with side vebts from now on.

?? The only thing worse than a single vent is no vent at all.

Will a single vent make my ass look fat?
