Gave the new jacket a go with navy trews and the chive matka. s'ok. I think there are better options for both.

@jcmeyer I'm by no means in the camp that hates dark trousers/navy trousers, but I think you illustrated why they're hard to do with a grey Prince of Wales jacket and why both items are frowned on by much of Styleforum (including [IMG], who hated the PoW odd jacket almost as much as navy trousers). Matching the trousers to the jacket overcheck works great...until you get to the tie. I don't think the green matka works with the darker trousers, but I'm not sure anything really does. You pulled this off about as well as one can, as I like all the items individually and they all fit you very well, but it's a hard row to hoe.

One option might be a black or dark brown knit.

Otherwise, maybe try this fit with some cream or pale tan linen trousers if you have them? That would open up a broad range of tie options, I think.

Those are some interesting points I've never really thought of.
Just curious. Do you think the problem is with grey POW jackets in general or with ANY POW sportcoat (in any colour)?

I think it's a challenge with the most frequently seen iteration of Prince of Wales check, which is light gray with (usually navy, sometimes green or red) windowpane overcheck. When it's lighter gray and you go with navy trousers, the overcheck color adds an element that might make the tie pairing a challenge either for the overcheck or for the trousers you choose.

PoW and other overcheck/windowpane sportcoats are great and I have several that are among my favorites. The easy solution is trousers in that most versatile color, what photographers call "18% gray" or "Zone V" gray, which provides a neutral reference. That works for PoW check jackets on other ground colors perfectly, but unfortunately it looks too matchy with a mid-light gray ground jacket. With a winter flannel or tweed PoW, charcoal gray trousers make a good option, too, if you don't mind a "northern lights" look (as I don't).

Just to clarify, the jacket has no grey in it. It's a cream base with a few shades of blue. The houndstoothing is primarily navy.

Completely agree with you, though. A knit could work, or a maybe solid linen/hopsack that matches the overcheck. It's definitely not the easiest puzzle to solve, but I also got the jacket knowing that I'd probably wear it without the tie, too. Hoping light grey trousers will work, or if all else fails, denim - and then definitely no tie.

Eh, well. Good to flop a fit sometimes to confirm the reason behind the rules :)

Thanks for the closeup; that helps get a better sense of the fabric. I think denim without tie will look excellent, and am curious to see how it goes with gray trousers.

Don't you consider the tie too short? No offense

@Murlsquirl, the time for your revenge is at hand.

The end of the tie hits his belt, so it's the right length.

I'm not as troubled by the green tie. I suspect that the IRL subtleties of color and texture would give the the navy trousers a bit more life to stand up to the lively green of the tie.

Thanks, this is really informative and helpful advice. And it makes a lot of sense.
Coincidentally, I've recently been considering getting this fabric from Ed that's a brown POW.
Have been scratching my head as to whether this would be suitable made up as a sportcoat. What do you guys think?
If it were paired with grey trousers, would there be insufficient contrast, and thus look more like an orphaned suit jacket?

Eventhough it hits his belt, I would tie it a bit longer just cover the bucklet at least. (To hit the bottom of belt)
