i think a belt creates a nice line actually when wearing a suit, separating top from bottom. i always wear one.

    would have been worth it.

I think if tie length falls between the top of the belt (and touching) and bottom of the belt it's acceptable.

The tips of my ties usually go just a hare past the top of the belt buckle.

I think if your pants have belt loops they need a belt.

If they have side fasteners that's different story.

Also, if you wear your jacket buttoned while standing then this whole thing is really moot since no one will ever really know if you've got on a belt or not in a lot of settings.

I just like to make sure tie tip isn't visible through the jacket - I'm not even sure what proper etiquette is there and am also not overly concerned to know. That's my personal sticking point because I don't think it looks nice.

Should just touch the top of the waistband, no?

This has always been my position. I was surprised to learn that not everyone on SF agrees.

To me, visible belt loops without a belt looks like the wearer forgot to finish dressing.

Like wearing shoes with eyelets but no laces.

    Cheers,

Disregarding whatever else is going on in this image I always thought thats how I was supposed to have the length of my tie. Obviously never going below the belt but the tip starting to cover it a little and the corners basically meeting where the top of the belt is.

There is no hard fast rule, however if it's shorter than the tip of your belt, then it will look silly and if it's longer then it will look silly and your knot will suck.

Okay - I fully understand that SF doesn't "do" great big Paisley ties. But I was in a great big Paisley mood today. Aint gonna lie. That happens from time to time. [IMG] jungleroller - that is what I aim for in tie length - or else with the tip just touching the belt buckle. But neither suspended well above nor dangling down below.

Yeah, it's a range/spectrum and a bit subjective as to which end of the spectrum you align with. In general I'd speculate most people would lean toward top of belt than bottom but I don't think either is unacceptable.

But like RTC said, there are unacceptable tie lengths, too.
