finally getting myself a car and want something small and fast and reasonable. any better suggestions?
3 series. 330i. Or 1 series. 135i. I'd go with a 2 door 3 series. Looks great and fun to drive. I've ridden in a Subaru STI, while make-you-vomit fast and able to turn on a dime its fitted out like an economy car, I'd rather have luxury over that speed and a 3 series does both well. If you need all-wheel drive, you can get a 330Ix.

If you can afford it, a 135i.

My recommendation would be the 135i also. The convertibles actually look pretty cool, and I am not really a convertible fan..

that looks like a toy/chick bimmer...

the one thing I have noticed with GTIs in a google image search is that everyone loves to take the angle shot from the front quarter with a wide lens...distorts the image and really does make it look more boy-racery (and some of the first pics on the search are some tricked out GTIs).

Looks quite nice in person (and especially from the drivers seat).
Here is what happens if I search "gti side" to get rid of those wide-angle shots.

It's more like $20k difference where I live. S3 has quattro drive, 265 hp, magnetic ride, s-tronic, much better interior..
    - from http://www.vw.com/gti/highlights/en/...erformance_dsg. DSG=S-tronic [IMG] [IMG] Call me crazy, but I think the GTI's interior suits its 'personality' much more than the S3. The Audi is so serious for such a sporty hatch.

Call me crazy, but I think the GTI's interior would look just like the S3/A3 if you had gone the boring black leather route. In the only places where there are significant departures (round vents, weird thing on the glove box) I think the GTI looks better.

The door panel on the A3 looks much better than the GTI.

The BMW 1 series is meant as a graduation present for girls..IMO. It's lame.. (except for the interior design) A GTI R32 is what's really good if you want small and fast. I could be wrong on the numbers, for a little bit more you can get your hands on a 335i (with or without xdrive) and have some real fun.

The 1 is significantly more fun to drive than the 3 imo. It'd be even better if it was lighter.

you guys all realize that a GTI can be had for about 24k (28ish FULLY loaded) and the 135 even as a stripper is 36k to start? why recommend a car that's nearly half again as expensive? they're not competitors in ANY WAY other than the fact they're both German. if anything it'd be closer to the 128 and even that starts @30ish.

I hear you on the lighter side of things, but i'm pretty sure a golf cart or a civic si would be more fun to drive than a 3 series for some, if you're taking weight into consideration. 300 hp/300 torque...that's fun for me.
